Hardback. Condición: New. 1st ed. 2021. This book is more than an autobiographical account of the career of a young graduate from Australia who spent his life working as a United Nations official. It is in fact, a critical, indispensable debriefing of a UN insider's account as it follows the life of a development practitioner for more than three decades within the global aid sector. It also goes where few others have dared to go before, providing first-hand insights into the realities of a UN career official's life. While many throughout the world may wish to join the "UN family" or have already become part of the development sector, it is presumed they all have a vision to act as vehicles for positive social change. However, expectations can and may differ once realities have sunk in. The book opens a unique space in the international aid sector - particularly, population security - around elements of personal and professional rewards and costs.…

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. For the first time the collective story of the tens of thousands of Australian soldiers who returned home with mental injuries Their wounds were no less real because they were often hidden. Major General John H. Pearn AO RFD, Former Surgeon-General, Australian Defence ForceA landmark contribution to understanding the human cost of Australias military history.Across more than a century of conflict, Australian soldiers have returned home carrying invisible wounds. From Gallipoli to the conflicts of the twenty-first century, what was once called shell-shock or war neurosis is now recognised as post-traumatic stress disorder, but its presence has remained constant. In From Shell-Shock to PTSD, eminent militarymedical historian Ian Howie-Willis draws on decades of research, extensive military and medical records, and a wide body of official inquiries to trace 125 years of psychological injury across the Australian Army. He reveals how trauma has been recognised, misunderstood, redefined and managed over time, often slowly, and sometimes at great human cost.Set against the most recent national examinations of defence and veteran wellbeing and grounded in the lived experiences of soldiers and their families, this is both a definitive history and a timely reflection. It shows that while the language and treatments have evolved, the underlying reality has remained strikingly consistent. As Australia continues to confront these challenges, one question endures. How can a nation prepare for war while reckoning with its lasting human toll?We didnt just lose him to war we lived with its aftermath every day.Seventeen years of service and all we were given at the end was a notebook and a sick husband. Each suicide sends ripples through families, friends and communities hundreds of lives changed forever. From submissions to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, as featured in Shining a Light Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 362 pp., illustrations, bibliography. University institutions have been a recent innovation in Papua New guinea, a late product of that country's protracted development towards nationhood. Charged with rapidly augmenting an embryonic national bureaucratic-technical elite, they have been eminently successful in fulfilling their brief: since their foundation in the middle and late 1960s they have undertaken ambitious programmes of teaching and research, and have maintained the flow of graduates which helped make Independence possible in 1975. There have been costs, however. The proper role of universities in Papua New Guinea has long been a topic for lively - and sometimes disruptive - contention. The universities are autonomous bodies at the apex of a pyramid of government controlled institutions of tertiary education, the very complexity of which has ensured the persistence of numerous tensions. There have been many individuals and groups with interests in the system to defend, and ambitions to promote. At the same time the universities have been so central to the government's task of nation building that in trying to maximize its investment in them it has habitually sought to bring them, against their will, more closely under its control. Relations within and between the universities, and between them and the government, have consequently often been uneasy, especially in the period following Independence as the country trod an uncertain path into nationhood. 0.0.…
