Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of 19th-century advancements in literacy for the blind, offering a comprehensive exploration of various printing systems and their impact on accessibility and education. The author meticulously examines the challenges faced by the blind community during this era, particularly the limitations imposed by traditional Roman letter-based printing methods. In this historical context, the book sheds light on the groundbreaking Braille system, developed by Louis Braille, and its transformative potential for empowering blind individuals. The author engages in a thought-provoking discussion comparing Braille with other contemporary systems like those of Lucas, Frere, and Moon, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. Central to the book's exploration is the ongoing debate among educators and advocates regarding the ideal system for printing and writing for the blind. The author emphasizes the significance of tactile legibility, compactness, and ease of learning, advocating for a universal system that would transcend geographical boundaries and foster greater inclusivity for the blind community. Ultimately, this book underscores the profound impact of accessible literacy on the lives of blind individuals, paving the way for their intellectual growth, social integration, and pursuit of fulfilling careers. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Williams & Wilkins Company, Baltimore, MD. 1914. 423 pgs. 25 illustrations including a fold-out War Map of Virginia, 11 b&w plates and several text illustrations. First Edition/First Printing. Bound in ruled red cloth boards with titles present to the spine. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (spine is faded and sunned). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. An excellent account by the author who served as a First Lieutenant and A. D. C. In 3rd Brigade, Johnston's Division, of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The officer later served as a Confederate Chaplain in the field. The book traces the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War by this first-hand observer. The book is particularly valuable with regard to its account of the Gettysburg Campaign. McKim vividly recalls attending the University of Virginia in 1861 on the brink of the war and recalls the Secession flag on the rotunda and the excitement among students and faculty. He discusses the constitutional issues involved in the Civil War and the question of slavery. McKim provides a detailed account of his first experiences as a raw recruit, his departure from the University, and decision to enter the army. His account continues with a discussion of his double-quick to his first battle as part of the charge of the First Maryland and the associated victory Union forces. He discusses camp life, picket duty, his leadership, Winter quarters in Centreville and Fairfax, a Winter furlough and the state of the population. His account discussed the Campaign of 1862 regarding McClellan's strategy, the evacuation of Manassas, retreat to the Rappahannock, various engagements with the enemy, the severity of the weather and subsequent movements to join General Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley. His account discusses Jackson in detail and the opinions of him as well as the marches and battles as part of the Valley Campaign. After the defeat of Fremont, he continues his account of the Valley Campaign, Winter quarters and subsequent Chancellorsville Campaign in all it's details. He further disussed the Gettysburg Campaign, Battle of Stephenson' Depot, the march and and actions at Gettysburg, provides a narrative of General Steuart's Brigade at Gettysburg, and then his preparaton for the Chaplancy following the battle. At this point his narrative discusses his training as a Chaplain, rejoining the Army and service as a Confederate Chaplain in the Army in the field. He includes the details and his observations of General Early's Valley Campaign of 1864, the Winter Campaign of 1864-65 and the suffering of the men during this time. He discusses the close of the drama as Lee is put in command of all Confederate forces, high desertion, treatment of prisoners, and more. An excellent Confederate memoir that is loaded with action, insight and first-hand observations. This scarce account is among the most valuable Confederate soldier accounts. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
