Jacob Merlo Horstius (1597-1644), born in Horst, Holland (from whence he derives his name), was a prominent doctor of theology known as an effective preacher at the Lyskirchen in Cologne, where he served as pastor. The Paradisus Animae, which has gone through many editions in the original Latin since its 1644 first edition, was long a favorite prayer book among Catholics. Brass hardware latch to keep thick book (1,058 pp) closed has also kept it tight and square with only moderately rubbed corners and edges. Extensive notations from prior owner on ffep, half title page and in last several pages of book in old hand, with several dates, including 1859, 1871, 1873 and 1875. This volume contains an illustrated edition of Kempis' Imitation of Christ, with four full-page engravings. The Imitation was a devotional produced by Kempis in the early 15th century, being a handbook inspired by the Devotio Moderna movement, which called religious reform though pious practices and enjoying the simplicity of life. Next to the Bible, The Imitation is the most popular Christian work in history, being a religious classic, and seeing numerous printings. One finely bound volume in 32mo, (32)+369+(11) pages This volume is in good shape, with rubbing and wear to the binding, and some leather peeling to the corners.
