As such, its function can be influenced by minor derangements of either the internal homeostasis or the external environment. In virtually all neurodegenerative conditions, the various pathogenic processes selectively affect certain groups of neurons, leaving others intact. The reasons for such selectivity are unknown, and theories proposed to explain them mostly rest on speculative ground. However, recent advances in neurobiology, particularly in the field of genetics, biochemistry, and pharmacology/toxicology, have shed light on the pathogenesis of several of these disorders. This volume is the result of an initial gathering together of a group of experts in neurodegenerative disorders ranging from biochemistry to clinical aspects. The book addresses issues in this intriguing and fascinating field in an unconventional way by combining in-depth reviews, reports of new findings, and proposals of challenging hypotheses. The book is divided into sections dealing with the toxic hypothesis of aging and dementia and the toxicology of parkinsonian syndromes and of choreiform and dystonic conditions, motor neuron diseases, and peripheral nerve degenerations. The last section is dedicated to ethanol. The chapters on the quinolinic acid hypothesis of neurodegenerative disorders, on MPTP, on cycas circinalis extracts exemplify how clinicians with scientifically inquiring minds and scientists with scrutinizing eyes attentive to clinical problems can integrate information crucial to the advancement of medical sciences. The book is addressed predominantly to specialists in neurology, neurobiology, and toxicology, but several chapters should help the neophyte in the field to understand the background of the most accredited theories and the major controversies in this rapidly expanding field.

Will man jedoch mit dem Wort "Pharmakon" unbedingt ein materielles Substrat verbunden wissen, dann waren etwa Placebos als Psychopharmaka zu bezeichnen, weil sie eben nicht in erkennbarer Weise direkt auf korperliche Funktionen wirken, sondern nur iiber den Umweg der Psyche. Erst mit der Einfiihrung des Chlorpromazins (1952) anderte sich der Gebrauch des Wortes und schon 1954 wurde ein Symposium iiber "Psycho pharmakologie" abgehalten. Insbesondere die bahnbrechende Entdeckung DELAYS und seiner Schule, daB man mit den neuartigen Beruhigungsmitteln der Phenothiazinreihe, bisher noch nie beobachtete Besserungen des Zusta~ des bei schizophrenen Geisteskranken erzielen kann, und die spatere Ein fUhrung spezifischer Heilmittel gegen endogene Depressionen, haben gerade zu eine Revolution auf dem Gebiete der Psychiatrie veranlaBt, die einerseits eine fast uniibersehbare Menge neuer Heilmittel herbeigefiihrt hat, anderer seits zur Aufstellung von rein psychischen Zielsymptomen, wie etwa Depres sionen, Aggressivitat etc. fUr solche Stoffe gefiihrt hat.
