Duodecimo, 7 1/2" tall, 251 pages + 10 engraved plates (Hoppin), plus 14 original pen and ink sketches (Oliver) and 1 pencil sketch plus 1 photograph tipped in; previous owner's bookplate on front endpaper. Leather over marbled boards. A good solid copy overall with moderate shelf wear, but the bottom half of the back strip missing (the top half with the title present and gilt tile bright) front hinge is cracked but holding, fore corners are worn through; the interior is very good, with hinges secure and binding solid, paper clean and lightly yellowed. A unique item. The artist George S. J. Oliver has for unknown reasons (perhaps as a presentation gift) created 15 original illustrations for this book in the style of the very popular Augustus Hoppin. Oliver's work is equal to Hoppin's in every way. Each original is signed by Oliver and the pictures are tipped into pages of related text. Some pictures include excerpted lines from the text handwritten below. However, no references were found for Oliver as a successful artist of the time. A photograph taken 'Sep. 1859 in Cincinnati" is tipped onto the flyleaf below the inscription "From George S.J. Oliver, Dec. 21st, 1853.".…
