Whitney and others in the latter quarter of the nineteenth century. Whitney was one of those who earlier had alleged that the noted Calaveras Skull was ancient, later claimed by most authorities to be a hoax. As someone who knows almost nothing about the subject it appears to me that the remains of Auriferous Gravel Man had been incorrectly dated because of various geological factors and because Whitney wanted so much to believe it.
