It is an account of men fighting a determined enemy while British command arrangements demonstrated that an empire can possess an enormous map without necessarily knowing what is happening on it. When Japanese forces invaded Malaya in December 1941, British confidence rested upon familiar assumptions: the jungle was virtually impassable, Singapore was an impregnable fortress and the Japanese were unlikely to prove formidable opponents. The Japanese responded by moving swiftly through the allegedly impassable jungle, attacking the allegedly impregnable fortress from the landward side and being considerably more formidable than the briefing notes had suggested. Jonathan Moffatt and Audrey Holmes McCormick challenge the persistent claim that British troops in Malaya simply failed to fight. Drawing heavily upon first-hand accounts from the men involved, they reconstruct the experiences of two units which resisted the Japanese advance, carried out exhausting rearguard actions and repeatedly found themselves paying in blood for mistakes made considerably further from the firing line. The 2nd Argylls had trained extensively for jungle warfare under the energetic Lieutenant-Colonel Ian Stewart. They learned to move through dense country, establish ambushes and regard the jungle as useful cover rather than a botanical wall placed there by the authorities. Unfortunately, being prepared for the actual battlefield gave them only a limited advantage when the wider campaign was being conducted according to a rather different landscape. Alongside them were the Plymouth Argylls, Royal Marines drawn from the surviving crews and shore establishments of HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse , the capital ships sunk by Japanese aircraft within days of the invasion. Having lost their ships, the Marines were reorganised to fight on land, because the war had decided that their professional development required sudden flexibility. The book follows the retreat down the Malayan peninsula, including desperate fighting and the collapse at the Slim River, as Japanese troops advanced with speed, tactical skill and bicycles?vehicles which had apparently escaped serious consideration in British imperial defence planning. Roads became clogged, communications failed and units were repeatedly ordered to withdraw from positions they had fought hard to defend. By the time the survivors reached Singapore in February 1942, exhaustion, casualties and confusion had taken their toll. The Argylls and Marines fought together during the island?s final defence, holding back Japanese forces long enough for some personnel to escape. For many others, surrender brought years of brutal captivity as prisoners of war. The campaign ended as Britain?s worst military defeat, although the phrase ?military defeat? usefully distributes responsibility across everyone wearing a uniform. Moon Over Malaya restores individual experience to a campaign too often compressed into photographs of surrender and broad accusations of cowardice. It distinguishes between the failures of strategy and command and the conduct of soldiers on the ground, who fought, retreated, reorganised and fought again under increasingly hopeless conditions. The testimonies reveal courage without pretending that courage alone can repair inadequate preparation, confused leadership and an enemy persistently refusing to follow British expectations.
