From the opening paragraph, "Purposing to aid the Cuban Telegraph Company, our government considered it advisable to make a reconnaissance of the great range of keys upon the Florida reef." This is the author's first-hand experience in Knight's Key and Key Vaccas, Plantation Key, Metacomba Key, Key Largo and Indian Key, Virgina Key and Cape Florida, Key Bisquine, or Biscayne, Tampa Bay and Key West, and many other places along the coast including the Fort Jefferson / Dry Tortugas area.
