Issued without a dust jacket. -- A biographical and mathematical tribute to Takeo Nakasawa (1913-1946), a Japanese mathematician who independently co-discovered matroid theory in the 1930s. While his contemporary Hassler Whitney became famous for the same discovery in the USA, Nakasawa remained virtually anonymous for decades due to the tragic circumstances of his life during World War II. The volume combines historical research, personal biography, and primary mathematical texts: - The Life of Takeo Nakasawa: The book details his short career as an assistant at the Tokyo University of Arts and Sciences (1935-1938) and his subsequent life as a bureaucrat in Manchuria; - Tragic End: It documents his capture by Soviet forces after Japan's defeat in 1945 and his death from dystrophia at age 33 in a Siberian labour camp; - Mathematical Works: For the first time, the book provides Nakasawa's four original papers (three on matroid theory and one on general topology) in their original German, alongside new English translations; - Historical Context: It includes extensive commentary on the "esoteric and fanatical" political climate of 1930s Japan and the history of the South Manchurian Railway Company where Nakasawa worked. Mathematical Significance: Matroid theory is a branch of mathematics that abstracts the concept of linear independence found in geometry and algebra. Nakasawa's series of three papers, "Zur Axiomatik der linearen Abhängigkeit" (On the Axiomatics of Linear Dependence), established the foundations of the field simultaneously with Whitney's work. Unconventional Brilliance: According to the editors, his work was considered brilliant but was overlooked because it was published in an obscure university bulletin and used unconventional notation. The editors, Hirokazu Nishimura and Susumu Kuroda, reconstructed Nakasawa's life using rare archival finds and personal interviews. Nakasawa's role was largely forgotten until the 1980s, when mathematician Joseph P.S. Kung identified him during an investigation into the history of the field. The book features 14 rare photographs of Nakasawa and his family, provided by his sister-in-law, Mie Nakasawa, who was discovered to be still alive during the research phase. -- Contents: Life of Takeo Nakasawa; South Manchurian Railway Company (1906-1945); Road to the Fifteen Years War (1931-1945); Fifteen Years War (1931-1945); Mathematics around Takeo Nakasawa; Chronological Tables; Works of Takeo Nakasawa: Original Papers [Zur Axiomatik der linearen Abhängigkeit. I.; Zur Axiomatik der linearen Abhängigkeit. II.; Zur Axiomatik der linearen Abhängigkeit. III.; Über die Abbildungskette vom Projektionsspektrum] & English Translations [On Axiomatics of Linear Dependence I: The B1-Space; On Axiomatics of Linear Dependence. II. The B2-Space; On Axiomatics of Linear Dependence III; On Mapping Sequences of a Projective Spectrum].

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Matroid theory was invented in the middle of the 1930s by two mathematicians independently, namely, Hassler Whitney in the USA and Takeo Nakasawa in Japan. Whitney became famous, but Nakasawa remained anonymous untiltwo decades ago. He left only four papers to the mathematical community, all of them written in the middle of the 1930s. It was a bad time to have lived in a country that had become as eccentric as possible. Just as Nazism became more and more flamboyant in Europe in the 1930s, Japan became more and more esoteric and fanatical in the same time period. This book explains the little that is known about Nakasawa's personal life in a Japan that had, among other failures, lost control over its military. This book contains his four papers in German and their English translations as well as some extended commentary on the history of Japan during those years. The book also contains 14 photos of him or his family. Although the veil of mystery surrounding Nakasawa's life hasonly been partially lifted, the work presented in this book speaks eloquently of a tragic loss to the mathematical community.
