Paperback. Condición: Good. The stories and legends of the Lushootseed-speaking people of Puget Sound represent an important part of the oral tradition by which one generation hands down beliefs, values, and customs to another. Vi Hilbert grew up when many of the old social patterns survived and everyone spoke the ancestral language.Haboo, Hilbert?s collection of thirty-three stories, features tales mostly set in the Myth Age, before the world transformed. Animals, plants, trees, and even rocks had human attributes. Prominent characters like Wolf, Salmon, and Changer and tricksters like Mink, Raven, and Coyote populate humorous, earthy stories that reflect foibles of human nature, convey serious moral instruction, and comically detail the unfortunate, even disastrous consequences of breaking taboos.Beautifully redesigned and with a new foreword by Jill La Pointe, Haboo offers a vivid and invaluable resource for linguists, anthropologists, folklorists, future generations of Lushootseed-speaking people, and others interested in Native languages and cultures.…

A collection of thirty-three traditional Native American myths, legends, and trickster tales from the lesser-known mythology of Lushootseed-speaking Coast Salish peoples of the Pacific Northwest. Stories passed down through oral tradition feature Coyote, Raven, Changer, animal beings, and supernatural figures in tales of transformation, adventure, humor, taboos, and consequences. Upper Skagit elder Vi Hilbert collected, translated, and edited narratives from Native storytellers, preserving traditional stories rooted in Puget Sound and western Washington. The 2020 second edition incorporates updated Lushootseed orthography and linguistic practices and adds a foreword by Jill La Pointe, giving readers of world mythology, Indigenous folklore, and traditional storytelling access to a distinctive body of mythology rarely encountered in general collections. Softcover. Condición: As New. The stories and legends of the Lushootseed-speaking people of Puget Sound were an important part of the oral tradition by which beliefs, values, and customs were handed from one generation to another. Vi Hilbert, a Skagit Indian, grew up at a time when many of the old social patterns survived and when everyone still spoke the ancestral language. As an adult, when she realized that native language and culture were being forgotten, she began to work with linguists and anthropologists in recording and translating as much of the Lushootseed oral tradition as possible. Haboo is her collection of thirty-three stories. Most of the stories in the book take place in the Myth Age, before the world was transformed. Animals, plants, trees, and even rocks had human attributes as well as the characteristics we know today. Characters included Wolf, Salmon, and Changer, who made things the way they are now. Especially prominent are Mink, Raven, and Coyote?three tricksters who are usually caught in their duplicity but who can occasionally rise to heroic deeds. Other worlds exist?the sky world, the Salmon People's world?and it is possible to walk from one to another. Many of the stories are light, humorous, and earthy, reflecting the foibles of human nature. While a serious moral is usually implied, instruction is achieved by humorously detailing the unfortunate, even disastrous consequences of breaking taboos.…
