Herman Snellen (1834-1908) "1834 in Zeist (Utrecht) geb., Sohn eines bekannten und hochgeschätzten Arztes, Dr. F. A. Snellen, studierte in Utrecht unter G. J. Mulder, Schroeder van der Kolk, Donders; prom. daselbst 1857 mit der Diss.: "Experimentelle Untersuchungen über den Einfluss der Nerven auf die Entzündung", liess sich in Utrecht nieder und widmete sich schon frühzeitig der Augenheilkunde. 1862 wurde er Primararzt und Dozent der Ophthalmologie am Niederländischen Spital für Augenkranke in Utrecht, 1877 Prof. an der Univ. Antrittsrede: "Ueber die Methode der klinischen Ophthalmologie". 1864 publizierte er: "Ueber die neuroparalytische Augenentzündung, nach Durchschneidung des N. Trigeminus" (Nederl. Tydschr. v. Geneesk.). Durch klinische Wahrnehmung und durch Experimente an Kaninchen bewies er, dass diese Augenentzündung nicht zu erklären sei durch Ernährungsstörung des Nerven, sondern traumatischer Natur sei, welche, infolge der Anaesthesie, die Verletzung und das Austrocknen der Cornea hervorruft. Er zeigte, dass man dem Prozess bei Kaninchen vorbeugen kann, schon dadurch, dass man das sensible Ohr vor das anaesthetische Auge annäht, ebenso, dass man beim Menschen das Vorkommen der Keratitis bei Trigeminus-Anaesthesie verhüten oder heilen kann, wenn das Auge zweckmässig geschützt wird. Eine u. d. Titel: "Ophthalmo-Metrologie" von ihm, gemeinsam mit E. Landolt publizierte Arbeit bezweckte, die physikalischen und physiol. Methoden der Funktionsprüfungen des Sehorgans der klinischen Diagnostik anzupassen. Hier findet sich die bekannte Methode d. Sehschärfebestimmung, mittels quadratischer, kapitaler Buchstaben, deren Striche möglichst 1/5 von der Höhe betragen, unter Zugrundelegung der Snellen'schen Formel: V/(Visus)-D'/D wobei D' die Distanz angiebt, auf welcher die Buchstaben noch deutlich erkannt werden, und D die Distanz, auf welcher der Buchstabe sich unter einem Winkel von 5' vorthut. Für Analphabeten gehört dazu eine Serie von Figuren, die möglichst mit den Buchstaben in Wahrnehmbarkeit übereinstimmen. Im 65. Lebensjahre hat Snellen das Amt der Univ.-Professur nieder gelegt und seinem Nachfolger und Sohn Dr. Herman Snellen jr. übertragen. Er selber bleibt, in der Stellung als Direktor des Niederländischen Spitals für Augenkranke, an dem klinischen Unterricht beteiligt. Das Kapitel der verschiedenen augenärztlichen Operationen wird von ihm für die zweite Ausgabe von Saemisch' Handbuch bearbeitet. Snellen ist Mitglied zahlreicher gel. Gesellschaften, Inhaber vieler äusseren Auszeichnungen und Verfasser zahlreicher wissenschaftl. Publikationen, von denen die bis 1883 reichenden bereits im älteren Biogr. Lex. enthalten sind.
