This edition was published in Leipzig by Insel, in its Insel - Bücherei series (No. 419), which were small, colorful, paper-decorated hardcovers. This s…eries of books issued by Insel (and a great many of them were issued) remain some of the most charming books published in Europe in the Twentieth Century. SERIES : Insel Bücherei (No. 419). TRANSLATOR : Herberth E. Herlitschka. IMPRINT : Im Insel. PLACE : Leipzig, Germany. DATE : No Date [ but 1931 ]. EDITION : Reprint , No printing stated, [but First Insel printing]. LANGUAGE : Old Black-Letter German. DETAILS : Small, slim trade hardcover; 71 pages; approximately 4 1/2" x 7", decorated paper-covered boards with paper title labels on front and spine. CONDITION -- Near Very Good -- This is a previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR : The title label on spine is darkened and chipped, with small loss; slight weathering (toning) about the edges; front title label is somewhat dulled; there is nicking and chipping about the edges and joints; board surfaces have modest rub; text-block edges are toned, else clean. BINDING : The book has obviously been read and thus is not as tight as when issued however no leaves are detached or loose; the boards have a slight bulge. INTERIOR : The paper is toned and likely somewhat fragile (typical of paper in German books from that era); There is an inked signature, with date on the front of a previous owner (Feldmann / 14 Dec 51). There are two small penciled notations , either from the publisher or binder, otherwise the interior is clean and free of marking. A small shop label of the original bookstore from which the book was first purchased is affixed to the rear paste-down ( Paul Ewert - Herne).

Prague became the cradle of tremendous events; mighty happenings, spiritual movements which stirred mankind to their depth, had their origins here, filling the town with strife and excitement and at time shaking her to her vary foundations. It was here that the first German University was founded. The monuments of this splendid city have a significance for humanity over and above their artistic value. Yet, is not Prague herself--that "golden city of the hundred towers" among the most beautiful of the earth, built up and embellished in the course of centuries by so many different nations, by Germans united with Latins and Slaves--in its entirety one great work of art. Is not she herself a proof that differences in character can achieve a work of perfect artistic unity? Surely the day will come when this truth will make her citizens--and perhaps all good Europeans--forget the barriers of language. Exax was educated at the Art Institute of Experimental Graphics (Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt) under Rudolf von Larisch , among others. from 1914 to 1917 he was a War Photographer for the Austrian Army and some of his photos can be seen in many newspapers from those days.from 1921 to 1925 he moved first to Greece and then to Italy where he worked as a Freelance Graphic Artist.after returning to Vienna, he founded his own company that didn't bring him the desired results, so he opened a new studio named 'Exax-Antl' where he worked until 1945 when he moved to Carinthia , continuing to work as a graphic artist.
