Im Auftrag des bayerischen Königs Ludwig I. schuf der Landschaftsmaler Carl Rot…tmann zwischen 1838 und 1850 23 Monumentalgemälde historischer Stätten Griechenlands. Der Bilderbogen spannt sich von Korinth über Olympia bis Sparta und Marathon. Rottmann (1797-1850) rekonstruierte kein idyllisches Arkadien; er hatte die Orte selbst bereist und gab sie als einsame und karge Landschaften wieder, deren Gegenwart in Spannung zur ruhmreichen Vergangenheit steht. Die auf transportablen Mörtelplatten mit je rund 400 Kilogramm Gewicht ausgeführten Werke kamen in der neu erbauten Neuen Pinakothek zur Aufstellung, wo sie bis zur Zerstörung des Gebäudes im Zweiten Weltkrieg in einem eigenen Saal gezeigt wurden. Erst aus Anlass der 150-Jahr-Feier der Neuen Pinakothek konnte dort 2003 ein neuer Rottmann-Saal geschaffen werden. Die Veröffentlichung bietet einen vollständigen Überblick über den gesamten, inzwischen restaurierten Zyklus einschließlich der wichtigsten grafischen Vorarbeiten.
