Hardcover. First Edition. Wide Quarto, 10 x 12 in., pp. 128. Illustrated with color plates by Wally Herbert. Dark blue cloth boards with silver polar bear to cover and silver title to spine. Light rubbing to extremities. One inch crease to front dustjacket flap. Watercolor, pencil and oil artwork by the master of painting polar scenes. This book presents a broad collection of Sir Wally's paintings, together with personal anecdotes of his experiences in the Polar World. Sir Walter William Herbert (1934 - 2007) was a British polar explorer, writer and artist. In 1969 he became the first man fully recognized for walking to the North Pole, on the 60th anniversary of Robert Peary's disputed expedition. With the help of fellow explorers, dogs, and air drops. Herbert chose to cross the frozen Arctic across its longest axis that crosses the North Pole, from Utqiagvik (Barrow) to Svalbard. In his 2007 obituary, The Telegraph called his expedition "a 15-month journey of 3,720 miles that has never been repeated. "He was described by Sir Ranulph Fiennes as "the greatest polar explorer of our time". During the course of his polar career, which spanned more than 50 years, he spent 15 years in the wilderness regions of the polar world. He travelled with dog teams and open boats well over 23,000 miles - more than half of that distance through unexplored areas. Among his several books, which he illustrated, were works dealing with polar exploration. He also had solo exhibitions of his drawings and paintings. In 2000 he was knighted for his polar achievements. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus. Wally Herbert (ilustrador).…

Scalpel and pencil on white artfoil prepared with grey printers ink. Image 215 by 160, framed to 420 by 355mm. Glazed with perspex. Inscribed, signed and dated, The pen inscription to the verso reads: "Robert E. Peary - For Dan Weinstein, fellow traveller, North-Pole - 4 August 1991. Wally Herbert. Peace be with you. Best - W."   A sensitive portrait of the man who claimed to have reached the North Pole in 1909, by an explorer from another generation who debunked him.   Sir Wally Herbert (1934 - 2007) was lifelong veteran of Arctic and Antarctic exploration, approaching both with a sense of adventure most often associated with the Heroic Age. He was also a keen artist throughout his intrepid career. After quitting the Royal Engineers in Egypt he vagabonded his way across the Middle East and Mediterranean drawing portraits for board and lodgings. His time as an explorer took him first to the Antarctic with the New Zealand sledging expedition, and then north to the Arctic, where his efforts culminated in the 1969 trans-Arctic expedition which successfully crossed the icecap via the North Pole.    In the 1980s Herbert was invited by the National Geographic Survey to consult Robert Peary's archive of records from his 1909 North Pole claim. Herbert found Peary's notebooks to be lacking essential data, and disputed the American explorer's long contested achievement in an article published in National Geographic, and then in a book-length work, The Noose of Laurels (1989). The present portrait was made by Herbert during the time when he was writing and researching this book, so the questions overhanging Robert Peary's achievements would have been at the forefront of his mind. This, perhaps, is echoed in the way Peary's face is shrouded in darkness.   Herbert's British Trans-Arctic Expedition reached the North Pole on 6th April 1969, as part of their 3800 mile crossing of the icecap. The inscription to "fellow traveller" Dan Weinstein adds another dimension to network of polar personalities surrounding this portrait. …

Scalpel and pencil on white artfoil prepared with grey printers ink. Image 160 by 107, framed to 294 by 342mm. Glazed with perspex. Signed and dated, A sensitive portrait of the man who might have reached the North Pole in 1908, by the man who definitely did in 1969.   Sir Wally Herbert (1934 - 2007) was lifelong veteran of both Arctic and Antarctic exploration, approaching both with a sense of adventure most often associated with the Heroic Age. He was also a keen artist for all his life. After quitting the Royal Engineers in Egypt he vagabonded his way across the Middle East and Mediterranean drawing portraits for board and lodgings. His exploration career took him first to the Antarctic with the New Zealand sledging expedition, and then north to the Arctic, where his efforts culminated in the 1969 trans-Arctic expedition which successfully crossed the icecap via the North Pole. The present portrait was made by Herbert during the time when he was writing and researching this book, so the dramatic rivalry between Dr. Frederick A. Cook and Robert Peary would have been at the forefront of his mind. Though not as closely examined in Herbert's investigation, Cook's claim would have put him at the North Pole on 21st April 1908. Peary launched a vehement smear campaign against Cook in the American press, and his reputation never recovered.    Herbert's British Trans-Arctic Expedition reached the North Pole on 6th April 1969, as part of their 3800 mile crossing of the icecap. …
