Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of this important Civil Rights-era anthology of African American writers published in 1966 by Harper & Row. Edited and with an introduction by Herbert Hill. Contributors include major figures such as Arna Bontemps, LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), Melvin B. Tolson, Ossie Davis, Albert Murray, Saunders Redding, and Robert Bone. 8vo (6" x 8.5'), hardcover with printed dust jacket, 227 pages. Warmly inscribed by Hill on the front free endpaper: "For June?Who knows what it is to be found 'Beyond Anger'?With Much Affection?Herbert," dated March 1966. The recipient was June Shagaloff Alexander (1928-2022), pioneering NAACP educator and desegregation strategist who, as the organization's first National Director of Education, played a central role in implementing school integration following Brown v. Board of Education. Herbert Hill (1924-2004), for decades the NAACP's Labor Secretary, was one of the organization's leading advocates for racial equality in organized labor. Light bumping and rubbing to dust jacket. A significant association copy linking two major figures in the postwar NAACP. Black Studies, LeRoi Jones, Arna Bontemps, Ossie Davis, labor history. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of this landmark anthology of African American literature edited and with an introduction by Herbert Hill and featuring contributions by James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Ralph Ellison, Gwendolyn Brooks, Richard Wright, LeRoi Jones, Ann Petry, Chester Himes, Katherine Dunham, John Hope Franklin, and many others. Includes an excerpt from Proud Shoes by Pauli Murray. 8vo (6" x 8.5"), hardcover with printed dust jacket, 617 pages. Published in 1963 by Alfred A. Knopf. Warmly inscribed by Herbert Hill in the front free endpaper: "For June? With appreciation for her help and many kindnesses, + With Much Affection/Herbert," dated May 1963. The recipient, June Shagaloff Alexander (1928-2022), was among the most influential but least celebrated strategists of the modern Civil Rights Movement. As the NAACP's first National Director of Education, she played a central role in implementing school desegregation following Brown v. Board of Education. Herbert Hill (1924-2004), for decades the NAACP's Labor Secretary, was one of the organization's leading advocates for racial equality in organized labor. Contemporary records and later scholarship document the close professional relationship between Hill and Shagaloff within the NAACP leadership, a collaboration implicit in the contemporaneous inscription. Binding somewhat shaken. Light rubbing and chipping to dust jacket. Minor foxing to front endpapers. A significant association copy linking two major figures in the postwar NAACP and the broader civil rights movement. Inscribed by Author(s).

Añadir al carritoMagazine. 32p., including covers, 5.5x8.5 inches, very good digest size magazine in stapled pictorial wraps. Cover story: "A Gain for Civil Rights" with an editorial from the Board of Directors and a letter from attorney Herbert Selwyn and the ACLU statement of policy etc. One, Inc., which took its name from Thomas Carlyle's statement that "A mystic bond of brotherhood makes all men one," was founded in LA in 1952 as a homophile organization with connections to the Mattachine Society. As the first pro-gay journal of its kind, it serves as an important source for pre-Stonewall homophile studies. In 1954 the US Post Office declared it obscene, leading to a four-year legal battle (chronicled in its pages) that concluded with a favorable decision as part of Roth vs. United States. Aside from its articles covering topics ranging from the Beatniks and Gay marriage to homosexuality and national security, One Magazine also featured poetry and short fiction by numerous prominent authors.
