In der DD…R wurden die in dissidentem Verhalten liegenden Innovationspotenziale politisch weitgehend stillgestellt und in den Bereich der (Sub-) Kultur abgedrängt. Dem gesellschaftskritischen Impuls der Dissidenten wurde unter der Ägide des staatlichen Antifaschismus die Spitze abgebrochen, das für moderne Gesellschaften typische adoleszente Aufbegehren als Movens gesellschaftlicher Erneuerung wurde durch eine Familiarisierung der Kultur kanalisiert. Beides schränkte die kulturrevolutionären Veränderungsimpulse folgenreich ein. Erst zwanzig Jahre später wurden sie beim Sturz des Regimes wirksam, in der Folge allerdings rasch von Polit-Profis zur Seite gedrängt.Im Westen wurden die 68er zur Schlüsselgeneration einer zweiten Demokratisierung . Hier ist Dissidenz als Folge adoleszenztypischen Protestverhaltens zu verstehen, in dem sich private und moralisch gefärbte Motive des Aufbegehrens, die stark um das Problem der NS-Schuld kreisten, mit politischen Optionen verbanden, die ins Zentrum der politischen Kultur: der Macht, weisen. Dissidenz ließ sich in politische Bedeutung umsetzen.Das Buch arbeitet anhand von Fallgeschichten verschiedene Formen und Schicksale von Dissidenz heraus und zeigt exemplarisch die unterschiedliche Dynamik des Verhältnisses von Individuum und Gesellschaft in Ost und West. Die Frage ist, wie sich in der Adoleszenz gewonnene dissidente Identitätspositionen in das Koordinatensystem politischer Machtausübung eintragen lassen.
