A Near Fine Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dust Jacket As Issued. PREPARED FOR AMERICAN SERVICEMEN DURING WORLD WAR II. - Produced during the closing months of World War II, this substantial pictorial survey introduced United States military personnel to Australia and New Guinea through more than 700 photographs documenting geography, cities, industry, agriculture, Indigenous cultures, military installations, and everyday life. Intended as both an educational reference and a cultural guide, it offered American servicemen an unusually comprehensive view of their Pacific ally. A Wartime Portrait of Australia. Organized thematically, the volume explores Australia's major cities, transportation networks, mining, farming, sheep and cattle industries, vineyards, ports, architecture, education, and government, while also presenting extensive photographic coverage of New Guinea and Indigenous communities. The result is an exceptional visual record of Australia at the end of the Second World War. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Folio; 13.25 inches tall. Profusely illustrated with approximately 700 black-and-white photographs printed on glossy paper. Publisher's illustrated hardcover. CONDITION: Near Fine. Bindings are tight and square. Text is clean with light, even toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. A handsome, well-preserved example. KEY FEATURES +++ More than 700 black-and-white documentary photographs. +++ Extensive coverage of Australia and New Guinea during World War II. +++ Prepared for United States Armed Forces serving in the Southwest Pacific. +++ Documents cities, industry, transportation, agriculture, Indigenous cultures, and military-era life. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Documenting America's Pacific Partner - Published as Allied forces remained active across the Pacific, Displaying Australia and New Guinea served both as an orientation manual and as a visual ambassador for Australia. Rather than emphasizing military operations alone, it introduced servicemen to the nation's economy, culture, landscapes, and institutions, strengthening understanding between wartime allies. An Important Visual Record. Today the volume is valued as an expansive photographic archive of Australia and New Guinea in the mid-1940s. Its hundreds of images preserve views of cities, industries, transportation, rural life, and Indigenous communities just before the profound economic and social changes of the postwar era. SUBJECTS: Australia, New Guinea, World War II, United States Armed Forces, Oceania, Indigenous Australians, Papua New Guinea, Documentary Photography, World War II; Pictorial History; Military History.…

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Baltimore, tall octavo (10 by 7 inches), variously paged, hundreds of plates and text figures. ***CONTENT: The small State of Maryland is nonetheless noteworthy for its diversity of landscapes: from west to east, the folded Appalachians, the Piedmont Plateau, and the broad Coastal Plain. These volumes document the 19th century history of geological investigations, the physical features and geomorphology of the State, its geological formations, mineral resources, and paleontology. Maryland rock formations range in age from Precambrian to Pleistocene, and produce a noteworthy assortment and diversity of fossils: stromatolites, sponges, corals, trilobites and other arthropods, crinoids, brachiopods, mollusks, fishes, dinosaur remains, shark teeth, whale bones, mammoth and mastodon skeletons, and more. Volumes in this set include: VOLUME ONE (1897), with 539 p. and 17 plates; CAMBRIAN-ORDOVICIAN (1919), with 424 p. and 58 plates; SILURIAN (1923), with 794 p. and 67 plates; DEVONIAN (IN THREE VOLUMES) (1913), with 1436 p. and 171 plates; LOWER CRETACEOUS (1911), with 622 p. and 97 plates; UPPER CRETACEOUS (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1916), with 1022 p. and 90 plates; EOCENE (1901), with 331 p. and 64 plates; MIOCENE (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1904), with 670 p. and 135 plates; and PLIOCENE AND PLEISTOCENE (1906), with 292 p. and 75 plates. The authors that made contributions to these volumes reads like a list of early 20th century "who's who" of the country's most notable geologists and paleontologists. ***CONDITION: These volumes are in VERY GOOD+ TO FINE condition, uniformly bound in the original ribbed green cloth, with gilt lettering on the front covers and backstrips. The covers are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. All outer joints are solid, as are most inner hinges; the bindings are firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. Most volumes are NOT ex-library, but have former owner's signatures on the front endpapers. Four volumes are signed by Marshall Kay (1904-1975), the celebrated Columbia University geologist. Save for one volume, no external ownership markings. This is a very handsome set of highly informative, profusely illustrated volumes. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.…
