Mitherausgeberin Ulla Haselstein. - Verlagstext: "Today the question of iconography has taken on a new and more general urgency. As a dominant cultural practice, iconography embraces the politics as well as the poetics of visual representation within their specific historical and cultural conditions. In its contemporary significance the question of iconography moreover reaches beyond disciplinary boundaries of conventional definitions and interpretations of the relation between words and images in a demand to critically compare and contrast their different iconographies as cultural practices of power. In their distinct arguments and from different perspectives, the essays collected in this volume are all similarly concerned with the iconographical power and poetics of the image, including a broad range of visual representations: prints and illustrations, painting, sculpture and concept art, documentary and art photography, film comedy and digital imagery. In all these instances, the image is looked at not as an exclusive and isolated phenomenon but, rather emphatically, as a visual and contextual event; as both the source and target of the collision and the collusion of word and image; as instances and symptoms of contemporary iconographic practice alike." Añadir al carritoCondición: Wie Neu. Zustandsbeschreibung: leichte Lagerspuren/minor shelfwear. Modernity, Liberalism, and the Function of Literature. Festschrift für Winfried Fluck zum 60. Geburtstag. Edited by Thomas Claviez, Ulla Haselstein and Sieglinde Lemke. The debate over the function of aesthetics can be traced back to the New Criticism and its aftermath. After its theoretical axioms and criteria of judgement had been debunked as ideologically charged, two factions emerged. A number of critics defended the value of aesthetic complexity, i.e. of ambiguity, irony and negativity, and refused to accept the arguments of ideology critique attacking the concept of aesthetic autonomy. Revisionist critics, however, tended to marginalized aesthetic categories, or rather, they described the respective textual features as complicity with the social status quo, and concentrated on art previously omitted from critical study because of its political or social agenda. Today, the dialogue between the two increasingly exhausts itself in mutual accusations of ideological partisanship. The 16 essays collected in this volume dress this rift by re-introducing the notion of the aesthetic which has tended to be obliterated from critical discourse in American literature. They draw attention to the fact that the literary imagination represents a specific social field of meaning-production and calls for a specific attitude of the reader towards language as a means of reality-production. In their close readings, the authors analyze the actual strategies of the cultural political work of literature. Consequently, their analyses highlight both the critical evaluations concerning the political implications of literary form and the different historical functions a text can fulfill at the time of its publication and later on. 384 Seiten mit 6 Abb., gebunden (American Studies - A Monograph Series; Vol. 131/Universitätsverlag Winter 2006). Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. While the ubiquity of the aesthetic in contemporary society can hardly be denied, the reasons for the staggering aestheticizing of private and social practices are manifold and have recently been subject to controversial debates within the humanities. Arguably, postmodern consumer culture, new hedonistic lifestyles, or the spectacularization of the political sphere are just another form of Americanization, yet the specific 'American' dimension of these phenomena often remains blurry. As the essays collected here show, to simply conflate the aestheticization of everyday life with an American consumerist ideology predicated on packaging and surfaces largely disregards the complex and tangled history of the aesthetic in Western cultures. In this volume, seven eminent literary and cultural historians from both Europe and the United States discuss the power and politics of the aesthetic in American culture (and elsewhere) with respect to multicultural diversity, fashion, the visual arts, aesthetic theory, the politics of race and sexuality, and, finally, America's response to the 9/11 attacks on New York. Añadir al carritoCondición: Neu. American Passions of the Real. Edited by Ulla Haselstein, Andrew Gross and MaryAnn Snyder-Körber. Throughout the 2000s, observers of American culture have drawn attention to an emerging transformation: an apparent shift from postmodern irony and play to a revalorization of the real and authentic. This 'turn' in cultural values has been linked to general conservative tendencies and the after-effects of September 11 as well as a lingering sense of crisis following post-Cold War triumphalism. This volume investigates this new valorization of the authentic and tests the explanations offered for the various 'returns of the real' detectible in the current moment. In close readings and case studies, 14 contributions hone in on aspects of American contemporaneity particularly shaped by discourses of authenticity. Topics include the significance of things in a world constituted via media representations, the prominence of trauma theory, renewed interest in autobiography, the pathos of religious experience, and efforts to define ethnicity as a source of authentic feeling. Contributions by Bill Brown, Catrin Gersdorf, Bärbel Tischleder, MaryAnn Snyder-Körber, Erika Doss, Susanne Rohr, Sabine Broeck, Ruth Mayer, Ulla Haselstein, Andrew S.
