No Binding. Condición: Fine. MINT condition The Globe-Wernicke Co. postcard with bookplates. Stunning advertising postcard 6 1/4" x 4 3/8" circa 1910. Bright sharp with no breaks in the perforation a 10! The front of the card promotes a build it up yourself and choose from Arts and Crafts, Mission, and Sheraton furniture movements. They famously promoted the company's modular sectional bookcases with the catchphrase, "An Individual Globe-Wernicke Bookcase Encourages Self-Culture." These promotional mailers were printed on both sides and featured intricate perforations. The Perforated Sections: The top portion served as a mail-in return card to request free giveaways, booklets like The World's Best Books, or more Ex Libris bookplates. The bottom portion featured two detachable, beautifully illustrated bookplates (ex libris). The ship is by Harry Loud Bridwell, signing as H. L. Bridwell, He was a celebrated member of the Cincinnati Art Club and worked extensively as a lithographer and designer for the city's famous Strobridge Lithographing Company. The peak of this specific marketing campaign aligned with the height of the Arts and Crafts, Mission, and Sheraton furniture movements. A large majority of surviving postmarked examples feature cancellation dates from 1910, 1915, and the early 1920s. They were an absolute powerhouse of production. Their main manufacturing facility in Norwood, Ohio eventually expanded to an astonishing 1.3 million square feet. They were so dominant that during World War II, the United States government converted 90% of their massive industrial capacity to manufacturing military equipment and storage systems for the war effort. Truly Global: Unlike typical regional furniture companies of the era, Globe-Wernicke became a massive international brand. They built highly successful licensed factories, distribution channels, and showrooms across Europe (especially the United Kingdom), Canada, South America, and France.
