Both trials reflected the Restoration government's tightening grip on the press, as fears of Catholic succession and popular agitation converged. The proceedings reveal the precarious position of booksellers as intermediaries between public sentiment and political scrutiny, and the growing use of libel law to silence opposition. 18 pages, printed in double columns.
