Collated, complete.George John Whyte-Melville (1821-1878) was a Scottish poet and novelist whose work mainly concerned field sports. His first novel "Digby Grand" was an instant success when it was published in 1852. Whyte-Melville went on to publish another twenty-one novels before his death after a hunting accident in 1878. This sweeping historical novel tells the story of Semiramis, Queen of Assyria in the 9th century B.C., as well as that of the love story of Sarchedon, the hero of the book. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart, except for fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Published in London in 1902 this is a generally very good example of this Sporting Novel of Horse Riding, Fox Hunting and other wild animal hunts with much of the action taking place in New Zealand, the book is dedicated to Richard Seddon, the then prime minister of New Zealand the…book is bound in the original publishers red leather spine with blue cloth boards titled and decorated in gilt, top edge gilded, all other page edges remain untrimmed internally illustrated with a colour tipped in frontispiece and seven black and white tissue guarded plates, printed on nice quality handmade paper, a larger format measuring 10.5 inches by 8 inches approx., the leather has a few rubbed pots along spine edge and spine ends, minor bubbling of cloth, small scratch to rear board, internally some foxing to outer page edges, a few minor foxing marks within else contents are in nice general condition. Classic colour equestrian sporting print c1890 by Harrington Bird (1846-1936) (LL) Print Sz: 15 1/2"H x 19 1/2"W Frame Sz: 21"H x 25"W Color Litho c1890s HARRINGTON BIRD, JOHN ALEXANDER British, (1846-1936) John Alexander Harrington Bird was a British sporting artist best known for depictions of… horses, equestrian scenes, polo players, horse racing and hunting scenes in watercolour, pastels and oils. Some were exotic Orientalist scenes of horses with Arabian handlers. Bird was educated in London and studied at the Royal Academy. In 1875, he went to Montreal and served as Director of Art on the Board of School Commissions. In 1880, he joined the Royal Canadian Academy as an Associate Member and exhibited there. He returned to London in 1885, and remained there for the rest of his life. Between 1870 and 1893 he exhibited his work at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Society of British Artists on Suffolk Street in London. There were many prints published after his paintings. He signed his works Harrington Bird. Signed by Illustrator(s).
