Harré challenges overly simple accounts of science as a purely deductive process and examines how scientists construct theories, propose the existence of unobservable entities, develop explanatory models, formulate laws, and connect theoretical concepts with observable phenomena. Topics include the mythology of deductivism, models in scientific theories, existential hypotheses, reference and identification, causal explanation, scientific description and truth, principles of indifference, and the ultimate structure of the physical world. The volume occupies an important place in Harré's development of a realist philosophy of science and anticipates themes he later explored in his work on causal powers and scientific realism.
