"Born in Hungary in 1922, Simon Hantaï moved to Paris at the age of 26, and fell in with André Breton's postwar Surrealist circle, where he was quickly acclaimed by Breton himself. But it was not until the early 1960s that Hantaï developed the "pliage" or "folding method" that has made him an influential figure on both sides of the Atlantic. Hantaï began applying paint to folded canvasses, which--once the canvasses were unfolded and stretched--resulted in irregular patterns of bold color punctuated by strips of unprimed ground. Throughout the rest of his career, Hantaï devoted himself to developing new techniques that slowed down or automated the painterly gesture--a concept that stemmed in part from the early influences of Surrealist automatism, Pollock's Abstract Expressionism and Matisse's cut-outs. Hantaï was featured in the Wexner's seminal As Painting exhibition of 2001, and his work is housed in major collections worldwide, including The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Celui qui va revendiquer le pliage comme "méthode" à compter de 1960 entend rompre avec l'ancienne logique picturale et recommencer une activité apparemment plus simple en pliant des toiles. Hantaï suit sa méthode du pliage pour découvrir du nouveau, plutôt que des variations d'un imaginaire qu'il estime éculé. "Je ne veux pas une réponse qui m'assure quelque chose, je ne veux justement aucune réponse, je veux l'absolu non-réponse, c'est-à-dire l'infini." A la lecture de ces textes et entretiens, on entrera mieux dans une pensée de la peinture ayant permis la mise à jour de la conscience du peintre lui-même, ce qui ne garantit pas pour autant qu'on saura mieux regarder cette peinture.

This book was published on the occasion of Simon Hantaï: Azzurro at Gagosian, Rome. Curated by Anne Baldassari, the exhibition focused on the significance of blue in the artist's practice, illuminating his affinity with Italy and the influence on his work of its classical painting tradition. Azzurro featured work from throughout Hantaï's career and included many paintings produced using his characteristic pliage (folding) technique, in which a canvas is crumpled and knotted, painted over, and then unfolded to reveal a pattern of alternations between pigment and ground. Housed in a custom-made hardcover case, the publication includes a large-format, saddle-stitched book featuring "Azzurro Blue," an essay by Baldassari, as well as color reproductions of the works in the exhibition and archival photographs of Hantaï in his studio and at home. The case also contains a double-sided folded poster with Tabula (1976)one of several large-scale gridded works in blue that dominated the Rome gallery's ovoid main roomon one side and color illustrations documenting twenty-seven works from the exhibition on the reverse.
