Herman Hecht (1923-1985) was born into a Jewish family on 11th April 1923 in Bingen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Hecht came to England in 1939 and was briefly interned in 1940 as a category C enemy alien. After studying at Leeds and Chelsea schools of art he worked for many years as personal assistant to Hans Schleger and in advertising and design studios. He married Ann Cave in 1957 after meeting at a graphics studio where both worked. Hecht ran his own design studio from 1958-1964. In 1964 he took up a position as a graphic design lecturer at Croydon College of Art, later becoming the Senior Lecturer and Course Director for the College's Department of Graphic Design. Hecht continued to produce work on a freelance basis as well as writing and lecturing on design. A magic lantern and slide collector and writer and early cinema enthusiast, Hecht undertook extensive research in preparation for a reference volume on pre-cinema history and inventions to 1896. His work was nearing completion when he died suddenly in 1985, aged 62. Signed by Author(s).

Thumbed and paper rippling. Ann Hecht (née Cave) (1929- ) was born in Reading, Berkshire on 15 January 1929. She trained in London as a graphic designer. She married Hermann Hecht in 1957 after meeting at a graphics studio where both worked. After marriage she became a weaver and expert in Guatemalan textiles. She taught weaving, spinning and dyeing in adult education for a number of years and produced several books on the subject, as well as designing and producing the Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. After Hermann Hecht's sudden death in 1985 she completed and edited the volume he had been working on, Pre-Cinema History: an Encyclopaedia and Annotated Bibliography of the Moving Image before 1896 , which was published in 1993.

The diagrammatic style of map was introduced by Harry Beck in 1933. Beck continued to design the Underground map until the 1960s. However, the 1939 and 1940 editions were designed by Hans Schleger. In this 1939 edition by Schleger, the Bakerloo line extension to Stanmore is shown as open. On the reverse there is a map of the geographical locations of central London Underground stations. **OCLC** lists no holdings.

It shows the routes of London Underground in a geographical layout, and not in the diagrammatic 'Beck' format used for the smaller pocket maps from 1933. This map was produced just before the beginning of the Second World War and used a design that had already been in use for a number of years. **OCLC** lists no holdings of the 1939 map and one holding of the 1938 edition. Very Good. Crisp with folds and a few tiny holes at some corners.

Original vintage advertising poster for the Liberty Finmar Fair exhibition held at the department store in London from 9-25 October on the Fourth Floor featuring a great mid-century design by the notable graphic designer Zero (Hans Schleger; 1898-1976) of white and yellow brush strokes forming the shape of a tree on a black background with small decorative stars and the bold title text below, the L for Liberty also made up of small stars. Organised by the importer of Nordic design, the annual Finmar Fair was a promotional event held at Liberty's in London during the 1960s showcasing modern Scandinavian furniture, textiles, glassware and other contemporary pieces, including those by the Finnish architect and designer Aalto (Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto; 1898-1976). Good condition, restored paper loss in top right corner, restored tears, creasing, backed on linen. Size: 75x51cm.

The Highway Code was first published in 1931; the Ministry of Transport (1919-1941), reorganised and renamed during the 20th century, became the Department for Transport in 2002.
