Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. 4to. First edition, in Philosophical Transactions number 297, March 1705, pages 1882-1889 pp.1887-90 cancels as usual. Bound in the years 1703-1705, issues numbered 283-288: 289-304; ie the last six numbers of volume XXIII and the complete numbers for volume XXIV (pagination irregular, viz: pp iv, 1521-1604, 1565-1810, 1803-1818, 1827-1948, 1951-2192: (pp.1413-1418 lacking in issue number 285: Volume XXIV, that with the Halley, is collated entire and complete); 26 plates in total: volume XXIV covering 1704 and 1705 title page dated 1706. Later stamped vellum, edges red speckled, label chipped, occasional browning. Armorial bookplate of N Vansittart (Fellow of the Royal Society, elected 1822), booklabel Winnard s bequest Free Public Library Wigan (confirmed deaccessioned circa 2002), unobtrusive blind stamp to first and last leaves of volume (not to Halley article). Contains also sixteen of Leeuwenhoeck s pioneering letters on microscopy, and many other articles by Hauksbee, Cowper, and so on. Bibliographically, the first issue of Halley s Comet is very interesting. The Phil Trans of this period were issued initially in separate bimonthly parts which were sent to the Fellows of the Royal Society. These separate issues were eventually bound up as volumes with supplied title page and index, either by the Fellows, or if remaining undistributed stock had rather a limited sale or were used to gift or to exchange with other scientific luminaries of the times here and overseas. Halley had been working on the mathematics of comet rotations for some time, and eventually published in 1705 three different versions of his argument: the first that which we have here, in Philosophical Transactions dated March 1705; the second also in Latin in June 1705 as a separate slightly shorter pamphlet with Clarendon Press, and the third, in English, translated by Senex. The Norman catalogue mistakenly suggests that the Clarendon Press pamphlet is the earlier in precedence, but this is both contradicted by the date (the Phil Trans version is dated three months earlier, March 1705, than the pamphlet which is dated June 1705), and also by the minute analysis of Rigaud, the early Oxford historian of science, in which he points out that the separate Clarendon pamphlet incorporates authorial changes which were clearly initially rather compressed into the Phil Trans version, as well as marking a softening of Halley s rather confident earlier claim of his correctness in predicting the comet's (now known as Halley s comet) return (see Rigaud, Some Account of Halley s Astronomiae Cometicae Synopsis which contains his investigations of the orbits of comets, Oxford 1835). Halley s analysis is regarded as being one of the most important astronomical discoveries, and indeed one of the most important scientific discoveries, of all time. The Clarendon pamphlet sold for $144,500 at the Norman sale in 1998: we can trace no examples of the Phil Trans version on the market.

The author, Menelaus of Alexandria, wrote the book to provide mathematicians with a comprehensive guide to the subject. This book presents a systematic approach to solving problems involving triangles on a sphere, addressing topics such as angle relationships, side lengths, and the calculation of areas. The author's clear explanations and logical proofs make this an invaluable resource for anyone interested in understanding this field of mathematics. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Añadir al carritoCondición: Near Fine. An engraved portrait of Edmund Halley. Single leaf, trimmed, verso blank. Sheet is 10 1/2 x 7 7/8 inches (268 mm x 201mm). Plate mark is approx 9 3/8 x 7 1/4 inches. On laid paper. Some soft folds to the paper. Engraved text in italics : "Edmundus Halleius R. S. S. | Astronomus Regius et Geometriae Professor Savitianus." The Royal Museums Greenwich has three different engravings of Halley on their website. Only one example (PAD2757), appears to match ours. Greenwich suggests R. Phillips as the maker, and lists the original dimensions as Sheet: 276 x 220 mm. The size suggests to us that it might be a frontispiece for a book rather than a separately issued engraving (especially since there is no engraver or other imprint information on this example). We found a possible match as the frontispiece in Halley's 1752 edition of "Astronomical Tables With Precepts Both in English and Latin for Computing the Places of the Sun, Moon, Planets, and Comets." (London: William Innys). There was also a 1749 edition of this same title which we have not seen. Regardless of the source, it is a strong image and suitable for framing as a gift for the Astronomy enthusiast.

It was a publication by Arthur Thomas Malkin and the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK). The SDUK was founded in 1826, mainly at the instigation of Lord Brougham, with the object of publishing information to people who were unable to obtain formal teaching, or who preferred self-education. A Whiggish London organisation that published inexpensive texts intended to adapt scientific and similarly high-minded material for the rapidly expanding reading public, it was wound up in 1848. Arthur Thomas Malkin (1803 1888) was an English writer, alpinist and cricketer. (Wikipedia) Sprache: english.

TOGETHER WITH LETTERPRESS INSTRUCTIONS: HALLEY, Edmund (1656-1742) The Description and Uses of the New and Correct Sea Chart of the Western and Southern Ocean, Shewing the Variations of the Compass. [London]: R. and W. Mount, and T. Page, [1712] Engraved chart by I. Harris flanked by letterpress instructions affixed vertically to left and right sides of chart (Chart: 22 ½ x 19 in.; 57.2 x 48.3 cm. Overall with letterpress: 24 x 27 1/2 in.; 61 x 70 cm)., title cartouche over South America, secondary cartouche over Africa with dedication to William III. BINDING/CONDITION: Hinged to a mat. Creases where previously folded, several small paper repairs where letterpress was affixed to chart, costing one word in paragraph 2; some light browning. (65B1G) APPARENT FIRST EDITION OF HALLEY'S FAMED ISOGONIC CHART, WITH RARE EARLY ISSUE OF INSTRUCTIONAL TEXT. "AMONG THE RAREST OF CARTOGRAPHICAL TREASURES" (Tooley). An instrument of singular importance for navigation in the North and South Atlantic, of which few examples have survived. While Halley is perhaps best known for his computation of the orbit of Halley's comet, his theory of terrestrial magnetism is one of his most important scientific achievements. Between 1698 and 1700, Halley sailed across the Atlantic in the ship Paramour charting magnetic variation. By postulating the existence of four magnetic poles, Halley hoped to explain the magnetic variations recorded on the Earth's surface. He published two charts during his voyage on the Paramour, a meteorological chart in 1701, and the present magnetic chart in 1701/1702. The two were the first published charts with lines of equal magnetic variation I the oceans; these were referred to as "Halleyan lines" by his contemporaries, and are now known as Isogonic lines. "Thus the isoline, or line of equal value, was invented. For more than a century Halley's magnetic lines were a familiar feature of the world chart" (Shirley). Instrument, rather than chart, is the best designation of this early issue, for which the printed text provides instructions on use. Throughout the 18th century, the Mount & Page partnership and imprint went through numerous permutations. Robinson dates that of "R. and W. Mount, and T. Page" to 1712. An inspired work of science by one of the great astronomers of the age, which went on to be reprinted numerous times throughout the 18th century, including numerous editions of The English Pilot.
