It has samples of the work of 96 artists and represents 22 schools of art across Europe. The catalogue has been produced to accompany a rotating exhibition of a selected sample of the art in the book. The art is predominantly religious in nature but there are genre pieces and portraits. The medieval paintings include religious scenes painted on wooden panels, and illuminated manuscripts. There is a strong selection of Renaissance and Baroque art from both Italy and the Netherlands with individual pieces from artists such as Titian, Botticelli, Durer, Van Dyck, and Rembrandt. There are a good many Dutch and Flemish painters and an interesting selection of works by both well-known and lesser-known artists of the 18th and 19th centuries. The paintings are well reproduced and the high print quality shows details of technique and materials used. The accompanying commentary is informative and gives a useful insight into the artist and the background to the painting. The descriptions of the paintings are detailed and give the measurements and medium of the originals, but do not take the place of seeing the actual artwork.
