This book is a scholarly investigation into the history of Carthage, the powerful and enigmatic Phoenician civilization that flourished in North Africa for centuries. The author draws upon a wealth of archaeological discoveries, historical texts, and linguistic evidence to provide a comprehensive and accessible account of Carthage's origins, rise to prominence, and ultimate decline. The book explores the rich cultural legacy of Carthage, its complex political and economic systems, and its profound influence on the development of the Mediterranean world. Through the lens of this ancient civilization, the author illuminates the broader themes of empire-building, cultural exchange, and the enduring impact of history on the present day. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This engaging travelogue documents three journeys undertaken by the author to Tunisia in the winter of 1883 and early spring and winter of 1885, providing a unique perspective on the region during a pivotal period of its history. Unlike similar works of the era, the author declines to speculate or include political commentary, instead focusing on detailed observations of the local culture, architecture, and landscape. This decision yields a rich and nuanced portrait of the country, capturing the essence of everyday life in Tunisia through vivid descriptions of markets, mosques, and interactions with the local population. The author's keen eye for detail and ability to convey the sights, sounds, and sensations of their travels results in a captivating and immersive read, offering a valuable glimpse into the history and culture of Tunisia during a period of significant change. Limited edition of 395 sets. Cloth, gilt cover-title, marbled endpapers, 4to, 25 cm, lx, 593, [2] pp, plates. Deakin in Catalogi Librorum Eroticorum, 1964 says of the first edition of the 3-volume set: " H.S. Ashbee (1834-1900), a wealthy London businessman, amassed over many years an extensive collection of fine erotic books, which he bequeathed to the British Museum. Ashbee's bequest, indeed, forms the nucleus of the private case of that library. His work on erotic literature was prodigious, and his three volumes (which are considerably more than is suggested by their titles) are sui generis: nothing approaching them in quality has ever appeared in English. The set, which is sumptuously produced, contains hundreds of curious items not only with full information regarding pagination, size, the number of copies printed, etc., but also with copious extracts and synopses, which greatly enhance its value. Ashbee's critical notes on erotic literature are always sound, well-informed, and incisive, and it is impossible to speak too highly of his work. The range of material which he includes is very wide (though there are few entries for German and Spanish erotica), with particular emphasis on English books of the Victorian period. Most of these are artistically worthless, as Ashbee makes clear, but a small number of first-rate productions were issued at this time, and he deals with these exhaustively. In short, these three volumes are quite indispensible. Ashbee's work has been reprinted recently (1960) by Charles Skilton in London, in the format of the original and in an edition of 395 sets sold at 25 guineas each. " Covers slightly scuffed, otherwise Good.…
