hardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Dustjacket. No Jacket. First Edition. New York. 1945. Querido. 1st American Edition. Very Good. No Dustjacket. 626 pages. hardcover. keywords: Netherlands Literature Translated Dutch Anthology Holland. DESCRIPTION - This is a fitting time for the American public to become acquainted with the literature of the Netherlands, a country whose determination to survive has been significant of its own character and of the values and traditions of Western Civilization. HARVEST OF THE LOWLANDS is the first collection on a serious and ambitious scale which enables the English-reading world to enjoy the prose art of a people closely connected with ours in history. The selections represent the work of writers from 1880 to the present day and are given added significance by a critical- historical survey of Dutch literature as a whole. This Introduction is extremely valuable for the wealth and succinctness of its material and for its interpretative point of view which provides a key to the prolific energy of Dutch writers during the past half-century.' 'The history of Netherlands literature reveals an uninterrupted contest between the two elements, feeling and reason, which like fire and water by their contrast and latent potentialities rule human existence, remarks the editor. It is therefore interesting to observe that in these stories -and essays may be found reflections of every artistic trend of the periodnaturalism, impressionism, realism, etc. yet always with the flavor and color of the Netherlands. The humanist's delight in life, in van Looy: the various facets of peasant existence, simple and earthy in Erens and Streuvels, complex as viewed by Walschap: the variety of provincial manners, in the stories of Buysse, Coenen and Naeff these alternate with foreign and exotic -scenes of the tales of Couperus, Slauerhoff. the colonial writers and many others. To provide balance, the intellectual passion of van Deyssel and ter Braak mirror the writer's endless demand for integrity and for adequate forms of expression. Writing in the Flemish language, the idiom of the southern Netherlands,- is given particular attention, so that the role of the Flemish literary movements is brought into .focus. One section of the anthology is devoted to Dutch writers in various parts of the empire East and West Indies and also to those in South Africa who use Afrikaans, a form of Dutch differing from the original yet inwardly and subtly bound to it. Jan Greshoff, editor and compiler of HARVEST OF THE LOWLANDS. is a poet and essayist. who has played. an important part in modern Dutch literary life. He was assisted by Jan-Albert Goris, who under the pseudonym of Marnix Gijsen is an outstanding Flemish poet, and who is known in this country as the author of Beléium in Bondage and Strangers Should Not Whisper. inventory #13782.…
