Sole edition, and a very good copy of an interesting book by an unusual man. Denis Grenville or Granville (1637-1703) was the son of the royalist soldier Sir Beville Grenville, who died in 1643 at the battle of Lansdowne. After education at Exeter College Oxford, he found early promotion as Archdeacon of Durham, where he married Bishop Cosin's daughter Anne. Despite (or perhaps because of) his easy circumstances, he learnt extravagant ways and was frequently in debt, being arrested in full view of his chapter at Durham in 1674, and managing to outrun his substantial income year after year. One cannot imagine that the section here against the 'sin of Prodigality' (pp. 130-147) would have been well received by his nephew, who must have been aware of his reputation as a spendthrift. During the reign of James II Grenville was conspicuously even naively loyal to the King, and he followed him to the continent, dying at Paris in 1703 in poverty and disgrace. Although he had been granted the (worthless) title of Archbishop of York on the death of Thomas Lamplugh by James in 1691, he was ignored for most of his exile by the very King for whom he had forsaken everything, because (despite his loyalty to James) he refused to abandon the Church of England. This is one of a small number of publications by one of the most unusual and distinctive clergymen of his age. The present copy has a manuscript label fixed to p. 178 and visible along the lower edge: 'Greenvills Counsell &c'. This was perhaps created by William Glegg, whose ownership inscriptions are found on the title page and at the foot of p. 208 the latter dated 1714. It is possible that he was the William Glegg of Cheshire who matriculated at Brasenose College, Oxford, in 1670, but it seems more likely to be a son or even a grandson. The Gleggs were a prominent family in the Wirral, and a previous William Glegg had founded a grammar school in West Kirby in 1636. Wing G1938A.…
