Field Marshal Francis Wallace Grenfell, 1st Baron Grenfell, 1841-1925 was a British Army officer. After serving as aide-de-camp to the Commander-in-Chief, South Africa, he fought in the 9th Xhosa War, the Anglo-Zulu War and then the Anglo-Egyptian War. He went on to become Sirdar (Commander-in-Chief) of the Egyptian Army and commanded the forces at the Battle of Suakin in December 1888 and at the Battle of Toski in August 1889 during the Mahdist War. Grenfell travelled with the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, who represented Queen Victoria at the Coronation of Nicholas II, and his letters to his wife describe both the coronation itself, his impressions of Moscow, and visits made in the vicinity. This copy was presented by the author to Ottmar von Mohl, a German diplomat who from 1897 served as a German delegate to the Egyptian National Debt Commission in Cairo. Field Marshal, 1st Baron Grenfell and Lord Grenfell of Kilvey, After serving in South Africa, Egypt and the Sudan, and as Governor of Malta, he became Commander in Chief of the British Forces in Ireland, and retired with the rank of Field Marshal. Many of the poems are addressed to his late wife Lady Margaret Aline Majendie Grenfell 1873-1911 (aged 38) and his Madelina Victoria Margaret "Nina" Grenfell Lucas 1904Ð1982 and also sons Pascoe and Arthur. There are also very sweet poems about their nanny, the death of their tortoise Pascoe's lost dog, Nina's doll and Children's Christmas parties. Very rare, unknown to WorldCat etc., Francis Wallace Grenfell (1st Baron Grenfell) was an older cousin to Lord Desborough (William Grenfell), making him a great-uncle to the WW1 poet Julian Grenfell.Julian Grenfell (1888Ð1915), known for his famous WWI poem "Into Battle", was the son of Lord Desborough. Other Relatives: Francis Wallace Grenfell was also the great-uncle of the identical twin brothers Francis Grenfell (the Victoria Cross recipient) and Riversdale Grenfell, both of whom were killed in action early in World War I and are commemorated in a book by John Buchan.
