Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Thus. 123 pages, frontis, photos, errata, minor edge wear, light fade to spine, bookplate. This copy is signed by all four of the sisters who were captives, Catherine German Swerdfeger, Sophia G. Feldman, Julia German Brooks and Adelaide German Andrews. There is an inscription above the sig…natures, "This book was presented to me by Julia Brooks whom I knew quite well," B. Horton. "In 1874, the family was enroute from Georgia to Colorado when they were attacked by Indians in Kansas. Both father and mother were killed along with three of their children. Four daughters were taken captive by the Cheyenne. The youngest two were later rescued by the army November 8, 1874, when LT. Frank Baldwin, 6th Cavalry charged the village and the Indians were so surprised that they left Julia and Addie. Billy Dixon was one of the scouts who discovered the two girls in a pile of buffalo hides, both emaciated and near starvation. Dixon later recalled how hardened scouts and soldiers turned aside to hide their emotions as the little girls sobbed out their story. The other two sisters were released after the army provided food and gifts to the Indians in June of 1875. Catherine, in particular, recalled instances of gang rape by young "dog soldiers" and indignities at the hands of Cheyenne women. Catherine and Sophia were subsequently reunited with Julia and Addie at Fort Leavenworth, and Col. Miles was designated their guardian. Congress set aside $10,000 from Cheyenne annuities as an endowment for the girls' support and education. On reaching the age of twenty-one, each sister received $2,500."TSHA. Frank Baldwin was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions. This was Baldwin's second award, the other he earned in the Civil War. This narrative based on their notes and recollections, was written by the niece of the oldest sister, Catherine German. While copies can occasionally be found signed by one or two of the sisters, this is the only copy I've seen which was signed by all four. A facsimile edition was printed later which gets incorrectly listed as the first printing, however there are slight differences, including the correction which was made on page 93 based on the errata of the first printing. Rader 2381.

Añadir al carrito123 pp. Illustrated. 8vo, publisher's cloth in dust jacket. First edition. Tiny Arthur Clark Co. label on front pastedown; better than very good in the scarce jacket. Only about 2" of the spine is present, and the interior has been reinforced with brown paper tape. The jacket is otherwise very good. Tipped in at rear are three T…LS, two to the author from the West Texas Historical Association, and one from the author to the Arthur Clark Co. soliciting publication of the book. This seems to have been the author's own copy.
