It does so through petrographic analysis of limestone bodies in the upper Modesto and lower Bond Formations and establishes their environments of deposition. The author defines six microfacies that occur in the two units and through this establishes, for the first time, the stratigraphic relationships and depositional environments of these limestones. One facies, the Cramer Limestone, is an intraclastic conglomerate consisting of bioclastic wackestone fragments in an argillaceous fossiliferous matrix, while the lower part of the La Salle Limestone, a bioclastic calcareous mudstone, consists of scattered fossil fragments in an argillaceous micrite matrix. A phylloid algal wackestone/packstone consisting of phylloid algal plates in a matrix of pelletal micrite and fine-grained shell debris overlies it. This detailed work contextualizes these unique limestone bodies within their broader geological framework and establishes an essential foundation for future research on the subject of carbonate petrography and its relationship to depositional environments.
