Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Gordon Hall Gerould (1877 - 1953) was an American philologist and folklorist who had an abiding interest, and thus authority about medieval legends. Guy of Warwick was one such legendary individual, known for his many deeds and for the stalwartness of his heart. Many are the stories about this person. In this modern retelling, Professor Gerould modernizes the language, but remains true to the story and the medieval romantic spirit. The book ends with a poem. "Guy and Amarant", taken from Samuel Rowlands, found in "Percy's Reliques". The book, published in London by George G. Harrap & Co. was published in 1914, and is illustrated by M. Meredith Williams, B. J. Olsson-Nordfelt, and B. Cohen. Gerould concludes his book with an Author's Note, from which the following is taken : |> The story of guy of Warwick is one of those national sagas that arose in England in the earlier part of of the age of romance. Like it in origin are King Horn, Havelok the Dane, Beves of Hamtoun, and Athelstone. Together they form a group of romances essentially English, easily separable from the cycles that grew up first in France. <| |> The foregoing tale is an attempt to give modern readers a literary version of a medieval story.
