Añadir al carritoPaper Back. Condición: New. Contained here is a collection of texts, appearing for the first time in English translation, that in various ways convey the ongoing tradition of unceasing prayer -- both personal and liturgical -- that is the sole reason for being of the thousand-year monastic republic of Athos. Golitzin introduces the material with a long introduction that summarizes the history and structure of daily life of Athonite monasticism, followed by in eloquent apologia for the necessity of monasticism for the spiritual well-being of the Church and of Western society as a whole. What follows are documents of great variety and interest: the spiritual memoir of a French Catholic scholar and monk who eventually becomes an Athonite monk, largely because of a growing sense of the continuity of Orthodox monasticism with the spirituality of the Fathers; the ''Tomos of Mt. Athos'' of 1341, which defended the orthodoxy of St. Gregory Palamas' teaching on the essence and energies of God and the validity of the experience of seeing, in this life, the uncreated light of the Godhead; a''modern Paterikon,'' immediately reminiscent of collections of sayings of the desert Fathers, consisting of lives and sayings of Athonite luminaries of our own century; several addresses and interviews in which an abbot describes the role of the spiritual father, the nature of the Jesus Prayer and the ways it connects Orthodox monasticism with the experience of Transfiguration; and remarks on the occasion of the translation of a relic of the newly-canonized St. Herman of Alaska to Athos, thus bringing the transmission of monastic experience full-circle, and underlining the catholicity of that experience. Altogether, these witnesses, if read with a receptive spirit, offer a powerful corrective to intellectual pride, spiritual tepidity, self-satisfaction and sloth. Extensive notes and bibliography enhance this valuable resource.

Mystagogy: A Monastic Reading of Dionysius Areopagita proposes an interpretation of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus in light of the liturgical and ascetic tradition that defined the author and his audience. Characterized by both striking originality and remarkable fidelity to the patristic and late neoplatonic traditions, the Dionysian corpus is a coherent and unified structure, whose core and pivot is the treatise known as the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy. Given Pseudo-Dionysius' fundamental continuity with earlier Christian theology and spirituality, it is not surprising that the church, and in particular the ascetic community, recognized that this theological synthesis articulated its own fundamental experience and aspirations.Alexander Golitzin is professor emeritus of patristics at Marquette University and a bishop in the Orthodox Church. He specializes in the origins of Eastern Christian ascetical and mystical tradition. He is the author of `Et introibo ad altare Dei': The Mystagogy of Dionysius Areopagita (Patriarchal Institute); St. Symeon the New Theologian on the Mystical Life: The Ethical Discourses, 3 vols. (St Vladimir's Seminary Press); and New Light from the Holy Mountain (St. Tikhon's Seminary Press), as well as several studies collected in The Theophaneia School: Jewish Roots of Christian Mysticism, ed. AndreiOrlov and Basil Lurie (Gorgias).

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Of the three major branches of Christianity, Orthodoxy is the least known and most misunderstood. The A to Z of the Orthodox Church provides students, researchers, and specialists with a desk encyclopedia of the theology and theologians, saints, sinners, places and events of the Eastern Church. Two millennia of the religion are surveyed in over five hundred concise entries, concentrating primarily on the last 150 years. Includes an overview of the early Church through the Byzantine and Russian Empires, into the present multinational Orthodox presence in the ecumenical movement. Many of the general entries cannot be found elsewhere in English, and the comprehensive compilation of biographies of 19th- and 20th-century Orthodox theologians (American, Russian, Greek, and many other nationalities) is published here for the first time. This book includes a detailed 4,000-year chronology, illustrations, extensive bibliography, and an appendix listing the current canonical patriarchs and autocephalous churches.
