Avrohmche Nachtigall, der kleine Abraham, wurde von einem starrsinnigen Vater um Jugend und Zukunftstraum gebracht, seine späte Liebe zu einem christlichen Mädchen gerät ähnlich unglücklich wie seine frühe zur Gesangskunst. Auch der Sonderling Mendel Hertz, ein dichtender Schuhmacher und Amateur-Philosoph, wird in der gleichnamigen Miniatur-Novelle von seiner Angebeteten abgewiesen. In »Levi und Ibald« taucht noch einmal der älter gewordene Simon Levi auf, zusammen mit dem windigen Poeten Ibald, wieder in einem tragikomischen Geschehen, in das der Autor die geistigen Strömungen und Auseinandersetzungen der Zeit einbezieht.…
