The narrative is a significant document of literary realism and early political antisemitism in the 19th century.depicts the precarious relationship (allegedly based on true events) between the rural population and Jewish cattle dealers. The novel plays into antisemitic stereotypes, portraying farmers as supposed victims of usury and exploitation by Jewish merchants. The book was published by, among others, a Christian association in northern Germany and served to shape the anti-capitalist and often antisemitic sentiment of the era. ; "Küppels Michael" is a 19th-century German regional tale written by Rudolf Oeser under his pen name, O. Glaubrecht. Set in the Hessian region ; "Küppels Michael" (often also spelled "Kuppels Michael") is a well-known historical legend from the Rhine-Main area-specifically from the Hessian municipality of Schöneck-Oberdorfelden. This folktale is part of Hesse's regional cultural heritage. It centers on a historical event or local legend involving the abduction of children in the region. The story takes place in the vicinity of the former municipality of Oberdorfelden, located east of Niederdorfelden on the left bank of the Nidder River in the Main-Kinzig district. ; Thie illustrations are signed "M V", likely Moritz von Schwind (1804-1871) who was a prominent Austro-German Romantic painter and illustrator. Er war 1807 in Gießen geboren und starb 1859 in Lindheim. Dieser Pastor hatte sein deutsches Volk sehr lieb, ganz besonders seine hessischen Bauern mit all ihren Eigenheiten, Gebrechen und Fehlern. Er liebte sie, weil er sie kannte. Und weil er sie liebte, sucht er Bauernart und Bauernseele immer tiefer zu erforschen. Als Otto Glaubrecht hat er eine ganze Anzahl Dorfgeschichten geschrieben, die heute zwar zumeist vergessen sind. . . Vom Antisemitismus hatte Glaubrecht gewiss niemals gehört. Nicht einmal das Wort kannte man zu seiner Zeit. Aber er sah, was in den Dörfern des Hessenlandes vorging. Er sah, wie ein deutscher Bauer nach dem andern - selten zwar ohne eigene Schuld - dem Juden zum Opfer fiel. Er forschte nach und fand, daß überall im Hessenlande die gleichen Trauerspiele vor sich gingen. Da stand er auf, - ein Mann ohne Menschenfurcht - und wagte das zu sagen, was keiner sagen mochte: "Das Übel ist aber, daß ich es kurz sage, die Judenkrankheit, schlimmer als Hiobs Aussatz!" - Fürwahr, es war nicht Neid, nicht Unduldsamkeit, nicht Beschränktheit, die ihm die Feder führten. Heißes Mitleid mit seinem Volke machte ihn zum Judengegner. . . Im Lauf vieler Jahre habe ich erfahren, daß die Land- und Hofjuden bei weitem nicht die schlimmsten ihrer Art sind. Sie sind harmlos im Vergleich zu den Börsen-, Bank- und Literatur Juden. Der Schaden, den sie verursachen, ist gering im Vergleich zu den Verwüstungen, den die Juden in der Politik anrichten. Aber die Hilfs- und die Bezirksjuden, die Glaubrecht uns zeigt, sind die Vorfahren unserer heutigen Juden.
