Der Erstgeborene trat nach dem Besuch des Jesuitengymnasiums in Znaim in den Kreuzherrenorden ein, wo er bis zum Sekretariatsadjunkt aufstieg, studierte in Prag Theologie u. a. bei Bernard Bolzano, und empfing 1814 die Priesterweihe. 1823 flüchtete Postl aus ungeklärten Gründen - er wurde sogar per Steckbrief gesucht - über Wien und Stuttgart in die USA, wo er sich eine neue Identität aufbaute, zuerst als Charles Sidons, dann als Charles Sealsfield.
