(Napoli 30 ottobre 1857 Napoli 26…agosto 1907) Figlio del pittore Nicola Scalinger, studiò all'Università di Napoli, dove fu allievo del filosofo e professore di estetica Antonio Tari ma si laureò in giurisprudenza. Iniziò poi a collaborare a vari giornali e riviste. Nel 1893 pubblicò due commedie e due anni dopo un suo dramma lirico, Fortunio, con musica di Niccolò van Westerhout, venne rappresentato al Lirico di Milano. Nel 1888 fondò a Napoli il «Fortunio», settimanale illustrato della domenica, che riscosse notevoli apprezzamenti e poté contare su contributi di parecchi letterati di successo. Oltre alla direzione della rivista, per circa dieci anni, e alle collaborazioni giornalistiche, pubblicò alcuni studi di estetica e articoli di critica teatrale e musicale. Entrò nelle biblioteche governative dal 1º giugno 1898, come sottobibliotecario di 2ª classe, destinato alla Biblioteca Lucchesi Palli di Napoli, usufruendo delle norme particolari concordate con il donatore. Resse la direzione della Biblioteca Lucchesi Palli ad interim dal trasferimento di Achille Torelli (ottobre 1900) alla nomina di Salvatore Di Giacomo (1º settembre 1902), venendo quindi trasferito alla Biblioteca nazionale di Napoli, dove si concluse la sua breve carriera. Negli ultimi anni aveva lavorato anche all'archivio del Banco di Napoli. Non molte le opere che ci ha lasciate, ma quasi tutte interessanti: "Ibsen" (1895), "Aesthesis" (1896), "La psicologia a teatro" (1896), "Il simbolo nell'arte contemporanea" (1896), "L' estetica di Ruskin" (1900), "Il secolo XIX nella vita e nella cultura" (1907). Opere testimonianti una personalità generosa, aperta, ansiosa di vie nuove, vocata al sincretismo: la cifra più sua che talvolta lo espose alle aporie e al facile modernismo. Difetti che se il destino gli avesse consentito una vita più lunga probabilmente avrebbe espunto o attenuati. Nondimeno il suo saggio su Ibsen, il primo scritto in Italia, risulta tanto tempestivo quanto felice nell'indagare con acutezza la complessa poetica ibseniana.
