This book is a loving description of Albuquerque. The author has been championing this city since moving here as a student in the 1950s. Familiar to many New Mexicans through the columns and articles V.B. Price has written for various periodicals over the years he distills in this book his philosoophy of what makes Albuquerque such an attractive place to live and shows us how to keep it that way. Albuquerque's character, as Porice sees it, comes from the land around it, the river running through it, and the ancient cultures that still surround it. The city has a strong identity of its own with which it is constantly in danger of losing touch because of the ravages of rapid growth In discusing these themes Price toches on a variety of issues that are of vital importance not just to Albuquerque but to other cities whose identity and quality of life are endangered by growth: the need for a coherent self-image, the role of historic preservations as both a preserver and a destroyer of vernacular culture, the problems of urban planning, and the challenge of creating culturally sustaining archituecture.
