Middle American Research Institute Publication number 16. First edition. John Gillin was an innovator in his ways of thinking. Important positions in organizations and universities gave him the opportunity to present his ideas to a wide audience. He got his A.B. degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin in 1927. After studying in Europe for a few years, he continued his education at the university and received his Masters Degree in 1930. In 1933, Gillin took a year off to teach at Sara Lawrence College where he prepared to write his Ph.D. dissertation. He first encountered archaeology on an voyage to the tropical forest of South America. Gillin's excellent photographic skills were a great resource on his many expeditions. As an Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Utah, President of the Society for Applied Anthropology, Founder of the Ph.D. Anthropology Program at the University of North Carolina and the Anthropology Department at the University of Pittsburgh and President of the American Anthropological Association, John Gillin was a very accomplished man.
