One central point of offence in the aftermath were allegations of cannibalism, which were strongly denied by central public figures, such as Lady Jane Franklin, Franklin¿s (widowed) wife and Charles Dickens. Likewise, newspapers reporting on the events expressed doubts about the true nature of these claims which originated from the hearsay evidence of several Inuit tribesmen. These reports were later confirmed by later search expeditions and ultimately by forensic evidence in the late eighties. But that seamen and especially officers of the Royal Navy - including famous war hero and explorer John Franklin - had resorted to cannibalism, seemed unthinkable to the British. So the Victorians chose to ignore or deny the accusations. And even today it can be observed that the British media - unlike German media - omit information about cannibalism in articles regarding new findings of the expedition. The question is, why. Why did the accusations stir up Victorian society And what role played the media in the aftermath For its investigation, this essay first recapitulates the events of the Franklin expedition and the search, which have been covered in great detail by many authors of different backgrounds. The paper then focuses on the Victorian values and ideas of British people of the mid-19th century. Of central interest will be the Victorian idea of a ¿true Englishman¿ and how Sir John Franklin, the central figure of the expedition, was perceived by the public. What were he and other officers expected to do in dire circumstances and what certainly not And what did the British think of non-English and non-white people such as the indigenous Inuit Using the previously gained knowledge, Chapter 5 will then analyse newspaper articles to interpret to what degree the accusations were or were not taken seriously and what role British perception of the Inuit and cannibalism played in that regard. Of interest will also be if the media always was a willing participant in the battle for the image of the Englishman or if there were inconsistencies and to what degree mediäs argumentation may have been influenced by government policy.

Die Sorge der jungen Leute um Werte unserer Demokratie stehen im Mittelpunkt, denn für diese Gruppe zählt das Morgen. Wo liegt die Wahrheit hinter den Begriffen Wohlstand und Wachstum Ist die moderne Gesellschaft noch auf dem rechten Wege, allein mit ihren Kommunikations- und Geschäftsweltformen Wird unser Dasein nur noch virtuell empfunden Bildung ist unverzichtbar, wenn wir Europa wirklich wollen, müssen wir erkennen, was von Nord bis Süd und von West bis Ost wirklich von Nöten ist. Wir sollten erkennen und verstehen, dass wir Teil der Natur sind und uns in ihren Gesetzmäßigkeiten bewegen, nicht nur nach unserem Wunsch und Wohlgefallen. Das hindert uns nicht an gutem Leben in Wohlstand, setzt nur natürliche Grenzen und schützt uns Menschen im täglichen Leben. What was once a niche genre, has long spread and entered the public consciousness and pop culture through a variety of movies and, more recently, through one very successful TV series adaption of a comic series, 'The Walking Dead' (2010) and its recent spinoff, 'Fear the Walking Dead' (2015). Video game series like Left 4 Dead or Dead Island likewise increased the ever-growing stack of zombie productions. And whereas there were few or no academic works specifically about zombies in the past, there is now a considerable part of academia that explores and observes the zombie from many different angles. There are works which examine the zombie culture according to philosophical, religious, historical, political or even environmental points of view.One issue that is being explored in these works is the question of humanity and how much of it is still contained in a zombie. As zombies are still able to fulfill basic human functions such as eating or walking, this inevitably leads to questions of human and zombie consciousness. If a person is 'zombified', does he or she still have access to the feelings of the person that was bitten Can these feelings be accessed and influence the zombie's behavior Or will a zombie always act like a mindless machine, never stopping and never settling for any less than human flesh This paper seeks to explore the questions mentioned above by analyzing scenes from the first, second and third season of AMC's TWD. I will first (Chapter 2) seek to explore how alive and conscious the living dead actually are, essentially ask, how much of a human there is still in them. I will first introduce neuroscientific/biological ideas to discuss how 'active' a zombie's brain is and later add neurobiological and philosophical input about consciousness. These thoughts, with an emphasis on the neuroscientific/biological theories, will provide the background for the analysis (Chapter 3): There I will analyze a selection of scenes from TWD's first three seasons and investigate how the series portrays the zombies' level of consciousness and agency. Finally, I will conclude my findings.
