"Newar Society brings to the Anglophone world French anthropologist Gérard Toffin's work on the Newars. The book is of extreme importance for Newar studies, and it is also beneficial for other scholars who are interested in Nepal's unique form of South Asian Himalayan culture. Toffin is director of research at the National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris and has been conducting research in Nepal for more than thirty-five years. His classic Société et religion chez les Néwars du Nepal is based on research in the village of Pyangaon and the small city of Panauti. Newar Society widens his reach and is founded on a number of different research locations in the Kathmandu and Banepa valleys. As the book's introduction states, the study gives "an overall picture of some of the essential features of Newar society." (Publisher's description).…

The Politics of Ethnicity in India, Nepal and China critically reflects on the social, cultural and political processes that have shaped these societies since the 1950s. By and large, ethnic minorities have emerged as powerful groups in the internal politics in most parts of South Asia and the Far East. In an attempt to partly accommodate the political and economic aspirations of some of these ethnic groups, in India, the authorities have created smaller states on the basis of language, culture, and in some cases economic backwardness. The Indian Union has formed autonomous district councils, paving the way (in Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland and Mizoram) for an asymmetrical form of federalism where special powers are devolved to local units. In Nepal, ethnic minorities include economically and culturally diverse groups scattered over the country. Inspired by the Indian experiment, the political elite in Nepal is now seeking to institutionalize procedures to fully integrate the adivasis/janajatis as citizens. While India and Nepal largely recognize the emergence of these ethnic minorities as political actors, the Chinese state, ignoring the political demands of its minorities, is focussing on their economic development and their modernization.…

From the preface second edition: This book was first published in French in 1981 by CNRS, National Centre for scientific Research (France), under the title L' Homme et la Maison en Himalaya. Man and his house in the Himalayas particularly highlights the symbolic dimensions of the house in this region of Asia. Beyond their physical contours, the dwelling and settlements of the Himalayan range embody a number of social and religious implicit meanings. They reverberate ideas and representations about the cosmos, the relations of power within family or village, the opposition between the sacred and the profane, as well as the dichotomy between sexes. In the major languages spoken in Nepal, for instance, house terms convey interesting parallels with the human body. Several examples are given in the book. These parallels are not mere coincidences. They transform dwellings in meaningful spaces for their inhabitants. Through these complex processes of symbolization, the materiality of constructions is transfigured. The house is metamorphosed in a symbolic space, a matrix of ideologies rituals and mental images, which must be explored thoroughly.…

Nature in translation. 13. Economy and development. Epilogue. Index. This book aims primarily at painting a comprehensive portrait of Nepal, between past and present. More specifically, it seeks to provide a better understanding of the recent tumultuous changes that have taken place in the country. Emphasis is laid on the rise of the individual, despite the remarkable resistance of traditional forms of belonging at family and caste level. The work of imagination in Nepalese society is of particular interest. The author contends that mental images, the system of values and ideological dimensions play a vital role in the cultural realm and political life. Similarly, religion is pivotal in the construction of selfhood and social life. From a methodological viewpoint, Imagination and Realities stands at the crossroads between anthropology, sociology and history. It is by combining these three different disciplines that the dialectics between local and global, particular and general can be most suitably considered. The book is based on intimate and continuous contact with Nepal over the last forty-five years. (jacket). …
