Dit gedicht is een felle aanklacht tegen het oorlogsgeweld: "Ik zie hier een grijsaart bij het zilveren hair gegreepen, / Ondanks zijn ouderdom, uit zijnen wooning sleepen: / Zijn zoon, door tederhied op dit gezicht ontroerd, / Ziet 's vaders doosd (sic) gevaar, en wil door drift vervoerd, / Den doodelijken slag door zijnen arm verhoeden: / Dan alles vruchteloos; de moord alom aan het woeden, / Ontzielt hem voor zijn oog. de jongeling vecht verwoed / En strot al vechtend neer, in 's vaders rookend bloed."(enz.) Het gedicht is in handschrift niet ondertekend. Het verscheen onder de titel 'Gedachten bij den oorlog', ondertekend 'A.W.N.van Gent te Amsterdam', in 'De leerzame en boertige Opmerker', deel I (1809), p.121-124. …
