Lasciata la carriera forense, si dedicò interamente agli studi scientifici, attratto in particolare dalle ricerche dei chimici francesi. Nel 1807 fu nominato professore di chimica del Liceo di Scienze Fisiche e Naturali di Firenze. Passò in seguito alla Scuola di Farmacia presso l'Ospedale di S. Maria Nuova, dove insegnò a lungo. Fu Commissario generale della Magona e Miniere della Toscana. Propose inoltre la perforazione dei terreni boraciferi nella zona di Larderello per attivare nuovi soffioni.
