Howard "Jack" Thorp (1867 - 1940) and first published In 1908 (and a latter expanded 1921 edition), without musical notation, titled Songs of the Cowboys; the book included "Little Joe, the Wrangler," written by Thorp himself. Cattleman Thorp spent some 50 years riding the range; his original publication represents the first systematic effort to track down western cowboy songs and poems.and western songs. With studied efforts, the music notations are drawn from pre-1930 sources.
