Évariste Régis Huc und Joseph Gabet waren französische Entdecker und Lazaritenmissionare, die durch ihre Reiseberichte über die Mongolei, Tibet und China zwischen 1844 und 1846 berühmt wurden. 1844 begaben sie sich mit einem buddhistischen Konvertiten auf eine Reise nach Westen, um die "Mongolische Tatarei" zu erkunden. In Lhasa angekommen, mussten sie auf Drängen des chinesischen Gesandten schnell wieder abreisen. Im März 1846 reisten sie durch das chinesische Reich nach Kanton und dann nach Macao. Während Gabet China verließ, blieb Huc fast drei Jahre in Kanton und verfasste dort seine Reiseberichte, die 1850 in Französisch und 1855 in Deutsch veröffentlicht wurden. Hucs Werke, in einem klaren und anschaulichen Stil verfasst, erlangten große Bekanntheit. Der vorliegende Band ist eine Fortsetzung seiner Wanderungen durch die Mongolei und Tibet, bearbeitet von Karl Andree. Er bietet ein umfassendes Kompendium über die Religionen, Gesetze, Bräuche und Institutionen Chinas und beleuchtet die drei vorherrschenden Religionen: Daoismus, Buddhismus und Konfuzianismus. Trotz der damaligen Wahrnehmung Asiens als Hort von Despotismus und Unterwürfigkeit erkannte Huc, dass Religionen und Vorurteile die größten Hindernisse für die freie Willensentfaltung darstellen.
