Gilliatt-Smith was a British writer and journalist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, known for his evocative and detailed works on European culture, particularly focusing on medieval towns and religious life. He travelled extensively in France, Italy, and Spain, and his writings often explore the history, architecture, and atmosphere of ancient cities and sacred places. His booksâ"such as Story of Bruges and Story of Brussels, published in the early 1900s as part of the "Mediaeval Towns" seriesâ"blend historical narrative with personal observation, capturing the romance and layered past of these enduring cities.
