Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Originally published in Australia, The Grass Library is a philosophical and poetic journey by one of Australia's most skilled, unusual and versatile writers (Sydney Morning Herald). Both a memoir and an elegy for animal rights, The Grass Library portrays the author's relationship with his dog, four sheep, and myriad other animals in the home he shares with his partner in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales. This collection of essays--with its lyrical language, its honesty and vulnerability, its charm and wit--will delight and inspire all animal lovers, and especially those who rescue animals.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. When I was in my early forties, I began writing a regular column for the newspaper sent to Episcopalians in the diocese of Chicago. In Faithwalk, I tried to describe my struggles as a believing Christian set against my background as a lawyer, single parent, son of aging parents, and sinner. This venture in self-analysis continued a process of trying to square my life with God's call to a Christian begun many years earlier, but the writing was, I believe, an insight into how God works in all lives. Though written from a Christian perspective, these essays should appeal to anyone struggling with his or her faith in a world that seems spinning out of control. And I believe that God uses nonbelievers as a fulcrum to test our own belief. Now in my early sixties, after the columns collected dust, I reread them, and I think they stand the test of time. So, I have decided to publish them in a book, adding a bit of commentary to provide the context. They have been arranged, not in the order they were written, but rather according to topic, topics suggested by the biblical narrative by which the Creator of the universe loved us so much that he sent his only Son to die for us. I hope you enjoy them.…

Hardback. Condición: Good. How university presidents lead is an extremely important topic, for both the welfare of universities and for society and for society as a whole. This book is based on papers presented at Wake Forest University, where three forums co-sponsored by the Center for Creative Leadership were held to address the questions of leadership in American universities. This book is structured around nine of the papers that were presented. Each paper was authored by a university president; each discusses a specific issue that the president faced during his or her tenure; each concludes with lessons learned. Three other presidents were asked to reflect on the essays based on their own experiences. The outstanding contributors to this book share their experiences about the kind of leadership situations senior administrators face and the moral decisions they are called upon to make. Among them are: Mary Sue Coleman, President, University of Michigan; Molly Corbet Broad, President, University of North Carolina System; William Kirwan, Chancellor, University of Maryland System; Edward S. Malloy, President, University of Notre Dame; Steve Sample, President, University of Southern California; Graham B. Spanier, President, Pennsylvania State University; Larry K. Faulkner, President, University of Texas, Austin; and E. Gordon Gee, Chancellor, Vanderbilt University. The passion that these university leaders bring to their jobs and the moral imagination that their roles require were all readily apparent at the forums and are captured here. The Smith-Richardson Foundation gave Wake Forest University and the Center for Creative Leadership a grant to address the question of leadership in American universities and to run a series of three forums. Thirty-six of America's busiest and most visible university presidents swapped and shared success stories, and reflected upon the lessons they had learned on the job.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. This is a beautifully elegant, deeply excellent book, pursued by grace on every page, in every stunning illustration." --Carl Safina, ecologist, NYT bestselling author of Beyond Words and Becoming Wild; MacArthur Fellow and founder of The Safina Center From the bestselling author of All Creation Waits -- a beautiful book of hope for Lent, filled with twenty-five of Earth's rare and wild creatures. Their stories, while tragic and uncomfortable, will wake readers to greater compassion and hope. Pangolins and polar bears, olms, lemurs, and leopards. We share this planet with creatures magnificent, delicate, intricate--and now vanishing at a faster rate than at any other time in Earth's history. Spend Lent with twenty-five of these endangered animals. Vivid descriptions of the miracle of each creature and the peril it faces will fill readers with wonder and grief at what these animals suffer on a planet shaped by human choices. Their true and difficult stories will wake readers to a greater compassion--which is what Lent, meaning "springtime," has always been for. These stories also wake in us a wild hope that from all this death and ruin something new could rise. The promise of Lent is that something new will rise. In fact, as these stories attest, our hope, though wild, is not impossible and is already loose in the world. Klein, David G. (ilustrador).…
