Less a supporter of Hertzog than in line with Steyn's political views, the driving-force of his career was his strict Calvinistic viewpoint and his ideal of a republic. Although his actions were directed by a strong desire for unity, he was not an extremist, and during negotiations was often prepared to compromise, provided an agreement could be reconciled with his principles." - DSAB V, p. 804.
