Añadir al carritoHardcover. blue cloth boards w/ copper cloth spine, white printing. 197 pgs w/ color illustrations. pictorial & blue heavy paper dustjacket. The 2020 volume of Ceramics in America is a celebration of the depth and diversity of ceramics in the American context. Beautifully illustrated articles explore the use of clay from the most basic building bricks to refined earthenwares promoting the political and economic issues of the American Revolution. Of special interest is the origin of the ceramic manufacturing spark in America, looking at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia cited by historians and connoisseurs as the height of recognition of achievement for ceramic production in the United States. The archaeological discovery of rare "black delft" teapot fragments from Charleston's Drayton Hall is recounted in an exciting collector's narrative. Other articles will include a profile of North Carolina potter David Stuempfle who continues the old-age tradition of producing wood fired stoneware, a study of Thomas Jefferson's Chinese porcelain, and Pueblo pottery collected by a German Museum in the early twentieth century.--Amazon. VG+ (bumping to spine ends; light scuffs, scratches to cloth. dustjacket has scuffs & edge-wear).

Añadir al carrito1st edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new. Physical description; 303 p.: col. ill.; decorated end-papers; 31 cm. Notes; Includes bibliographical references (p. 300) and index. Summary; This book showcases the world's finest collection of English creamware made for American customers in the 1760-1820 period. It includes pottery that memorialises revolutionary heroes and newly elected presidents; depicts the early 19th-century firefighters of Boston; illustrates the struggle for liberty and the battle to end slavery; and records naval battles and scenes of early American life with hand-painted and transfer printed images on the smooth shiny glaze of English creamware. Despite political embargoes, declarations of war, and skirmishes on land and sea, British potters were able to provide goods so desirable and meaningful to the American market that they transcended the frequent hostilities. At every opportunity sympathetic English potters celebrated and commemorated the American cause, eager to secure the custom of this emerging nation. These wares capture the spirit of America. They have been saved, passed down as heirlooms, and been a source of pleasure for collectors. Through the generosity of his family and friends, Winterthur is able to share the S. Robert Teitelman collection, which celebrates the establishment of America, the development of its maritime trade through the port of Liverpool in England, and the ceramic souvenirs that wished Success to America. English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 25.5 x 32 cm; 2,409 kg; 303 pages with colour illustrations.; Used with minor signs of wear. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book covers the largest and most important collection of Chinese and Export figures currently existing in the world. Collected by James E. Sowell of Dallas, Texas, there are over 170 items including over 50 bird figures, a dozen dogs, and a unique pair of leopards possibly made for the Imperial Summer Palace. It includes a history of the European trade with Canton and contains an informative guide to the dating of many of these pieces, with many pictures of the bases of the figures. The book catalogues the James E. Sowell collection in detail, arraging the animals according to approximate zoological taxanomic groups and commenting on some of the scientific knowledge available at the time. Traditional theory says that the Chinese potters were simply copying European species and models but the book proposes that, with a few significant exceptions, the resulting porcelain are inspired by Chinese fauna. Mainly consisting of Chinese export figures of the 17th, 18th and early 19th century, there are also a few realted figures from Japanese kilns.
